I'm so late on this thread, but my Fireglo 1974 has the red dots & an almost identical neck/stress crack. Has been there since before I bought it in 1987 & is solid as a rock. It is one of my best playing basses in fact.

I assume the cracks in the neck of mine came from some unsuccessful "choreography" of his former player, or it simply had an unlucky drop.
However, it wasn't played very much ever since, it hung on the wall corner, undiscovered in a small guitar shop in Frankfurt for some years, hence the frets are in excellent shape, close to new!!!
