The guitar picture was her boyfriend showing her stuff. Not a record company thing.

Ok, Steve, good point.I think that's the record company stuff. But on her show, before her album, she was into harder edged stuff, and completely disagreed with going totally pop.

"Etc (not "ect")"
Sorry, I'm dyslexic. And I knew what it meant, I just wanted more points.

I'm not saying she is on par with anyone else I like. She's my escape and my time to just laugh at myself and just plain have fun. I'm not comparing her to anyone else, everyone else is. She's not an amazing singer. In fact, I love her first album, but she's just awful. Her voice cracks constantly. Her second album is more refined, as she had just taken lessons and knows how to control it. But the songs are much more pop.

Who cares what I listen to. I think I have a wide range in music. I like a lot of old stuff., but I like a lot of new stuff. I like James Blunt, John Mayer, KT Tunstall, Ashlee, Coldplay, Foo Fighters. And my old stuff. Beatles, Pink Floyd, Rush, Sabbath, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, U2.. goes on and on.

Well, take some solace in the fact that you're probably the only person on planet earth that likes Ashlee SImpson AND Mercyful Fate!

I never heard of Mercyful Fate or King Diamond? Is King Diamond any relation to The Mighty Diamonds? What kinda bands are they, I'm always interested in learning about new music.

Sorry, i misunderstood your point, Nate - i thought you were asking what does this abbreviation stand for. I'm sometimes having trouble understanding what other people say cause i'm not a native English speaker. Peace?
PS: i like France Gall's songs, and she's never been a superb singer either, as far as technique is concerned. But ssh! that's a secret! Image

Its pretty hardcore metal stuff. And Nate, listen to whatever gets you pumped up, but you started the thread about Ashlee being a Rickenbacker artist, we're all giving our opinions, which you asked for. Image

Nate, you've got pretty broad taste in music & very good taste in basses, so I'd say you're on the right track.
Variety is a very good thing.

Very true, Steve. Sorry I got all offended when the jokes started flying, but it's hard for me to find anything positive about her unless it's on an Ashlee forum, and usually there the people are little kids who are jerks.

"Well, take some solace in the fact that you're probably the only person on planet earth that likes Ashlee Simpson AND Mercyful Fate!"

ROFL! Prolly. I just like that fact that I can put them on the same playlist and go from "I didn't steal your Boyfriend" to "All Hail Satan!"

Nate, if it helps, I understand your difficulties completely, and you're not alone Image. And I completely agree with Kevin's comment "variety is a good thing".

Last night I watched "the Abbey Road Sessions" on tv which featured, amongst others, RHCPeppers. Flea made a fantastic point about loving both the Clash's Sandanista and Van Halen's 2nd album, and pointed out that he doesn't discriminate between the 2 simply because one is deemed to be more intellectually or politically worthy than the other. He loves them both because he loves them both.

I can never understand why someone would only like "worthy" music. What the heck is "worthy" music? I grew up in a "purist jazz" household (and hence love jazz - I didn't have much choice, LOL!) which deemed almost anything other than jazz or classical "not worthy", and yet I love Motorhead, Hawkwind, Manowar, Venom, Van Halen, Rush, the Carpenters, The Police, Abba, Yes, Pink Floyd, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Christina Aguilera, Seal, Kylie, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Zero 7, Green Day, the Stranglers, Pink, Iio, Kate Bush, Bow Wow Wow etc etc etc, and most definitely the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who seem to have an extremely mature and all-embracing view of music. I also think Take That's recent single "Patience" was a marvelous song, despite them being essentially *gasp* a boy band. Heck, I also love many show songs and songs from Disney films....and I like the Monkees too!

Why should anyone feel guilty about liking pop music? You should never need to justify why you like something musically, any more than why you like a particular colour or a type of food. If you like it, that's enough. In my case, it means I can go from "Countess Bathory" to "Meeting of the Spirits" to "Genie in a Bottle" to "Thank You For the Music", which certainly keeps things interesting....but then you know all about that!

Variety is the spice of life..."Abba to Zappa and everything in between". All I ask from an artist is honesty and it's usually evident when it is missing. Image

I've always liked Stevie Nicks. At least she does write her own material and dosen't depend on other songwriters. I saw her performance on the Super Bowl pre-game show, and even though her voice has dropped with the years(mine has too), she's still beautiful IMHO. I can't say the same for me!

You're saying Ash doesn't have some sort of involvement in her songs? She has a songwriting credit on every song on both albums. I believe she has only recorded 4 songs that she hadn't had any involvement in, a christmas song, songs for movie soundtracks and her latest single.

She wrote the songs with her guitar player/former boyfriend.

Nate, if people would just listen to her lyrics, they'd know her involvement. They are her life.
