I'm using Thomastik-Infeld JR344 long scale Jazz Bass Round Wound.

I'm really happy with the sound. They're very low tension which is great
for the 4005 neck and they seem to last a long time. Kinda pricey.
The E string is .089" which fits my "R" without any problem.

Well I've done some work on the 4005 WB and it plays very nice now. There was some fingerboard separation due to the truss rods being bent down, so I took them out and straightened the threaded part and cleaned them up . I then glued up and clamped the neck overnight. Since doing the 4005 WB I then took the rods out of my 4001 and worked on those also , although the neck is in good shape.
I was a bit nervous doing the rods but now I feel that it is not that hard to do, it is just a bit tricky getting the nuts out with the rods bent down; patience, patience and patience are the most important requirements, thats for sure.

Sounds great Jeff. I know my infatuation with the 4005 is solely on its visual appeal and is probably irrational. I've taken quite a beating over the years for being an HB fan, but the 4005 is one of the most original and attractive HB designs ever made. It's got to sound better than the old EB's which had a nice body and neck design but sported mushy humbuckers at the neck.
I don't understand why Ric can't increase production in general, as well as begin to offer some RIs of their more unique pieces. If the orders are pouring and they can't keep up, most manufacterers increase capacity rather than lose the business. I mean really, how many more versions of the 4001-4003 do we really need? It reminds me a bit of the monotonous Fender habit of turning out one j or p variation after another.

The 4005 sounds nothing like a typical HB bass. It sounds like a Rick with even more bottom end. When I solo the neck PU it has such a nice deep bottom end to it, with the bridge PU soloed I can get a nice burpy Jacoesque tone with more treble bite to it when plucked near the bridge. If I palm mute the strings at the bridge I get a real nice deep dubby tone that is delicious. I find the neck it a little slimmer than the one on my '73 4001, making it super easy to play.

Hi Everyone - I just wanted to say that I managed to get my hands on a gorgeous 1967 Ric 4005 bass today at the Voxfest V in North Hollywood
!!!! Many thanks to both Jaime (for telling me about it), and to Claude, for selling it to me today....it's an awesome axe
!!!! I will post a pic of my collection of Ric basses here, after I get moved and settled into my new place.
