I remember Chris Welch from Melody Maker who was in the studio listening to Yes making the Close To The Edge album describing Chris Squires sound as "diesel powered basslines".
Bottom end in abundance in my opinion. We posted a couple of rehearsal room takes on our myspace site www.myspace.com/seyestribute of Heart of the Sunrise and part of The Ancient from Topographic.
I didnt have the Di on and just had an SM57 in front of the 15" and I thought the sound was too bassy in places. For my overall sound I usually combine mic and Di at gigs to get a more raspy sound. Its horses for courses and the Rick can give you Motown or Motorhead depending on how you use the pickups and set up your amp. Many times at gigs and rehearsals people seem surprised at the ammount of bass fundamental coming from the Rick.
As Shawn pointed out there is a preconcieved idea of the Rick sound which is a surprise especially when it comes up in articles in otherwise very broadminded guitar magazines.
Its good to see more Ricks cropping up on tv with the new wave of guitar bands using a more open minded attitude.
One of the most bottom ended powerful basses I have come across is the humble Hofner violin...again not everyones cup of tea or half as versatile as a Rick but a very different sound than its looks would have you think it capable of.
