After reading through this thread I’m a little bit surprised that no mention as yet been made of one P J Proby.

Who, to my way thinking, was largely responsible for creating the early 1960s British record buying demand for the kind of material that Jones and Englebert later became better known for. Indeed, when P J Proby was at his short-lived UK height and Tom Jones first got going with “It’s Not Usual” he was sometimes referred to as ‘A Poor Man’s P J Proby'.

I actually don't agree Peter but that is what debate is for, Proby came to prominence in UK through the Beatles one off TV special Around The Beatles. His first two hits in UK were Hold Me and Together, both upbeat numbers not at all IMO in the vein of stuff recorded by Jones.
He released Somewhere which could arguably be in same vein in December 64 but Jones released It's Not Unusual in February 65.
Funnily enough Proby released his versions on albums, of two Jones hits after Jones had released them With These Hands and I'm Coming Home.
I liked Proby especially on ballad type stuff to be honest.
