The new ones still have way more presence than a 72 even with the cap shorted, I have one.

My '72 is by far my favourite sounding Ric that I've ever played. Compared to some it is indeed quite warm and growly, but I prefer that.

While it reduces output, I can see the intuitive design sense in the .0047 cap. The neck pickup produces the lows and the bridge pickup produces the highs; simple enough. I still prefer the fuller sound of the bypass and letting the pickups produce the full harmonics of the pickup position relative to the string vibration.
