Considering the way I treat my RIC's, they'd better be women!

Interesting, that. In my native tongue, genders are applied to inanimate objects, too, and according to our grammar, guitar is feminine while bass is masculine. But of course, there are ways (suffixes, etc) to make bass a feminine noun.
A good friend of mine (a bassist) once said, "that's because guitars are for women and basses are for men". Hmmm. Not so sure.

As to why they're feminine:

They look gorgeous, feel delightful in your arms, they'll make you weep with joy, or drive you insane with frustration.

Their voices can sound like choirs of Angels, and give you goose bumps when you listen to them, how they say things means more than what they say.

They're meant to be cherished, loved and respected over the years, in return they are unflinchingly loyal, and are always there when you need them most.

Oh, and the Redheads are the nicest !!!

Yes, Elys, I assure you I'm quite familiar with the acronym. I guess irony does not translate well here; I was trying to reinforce the feminine aspect being discussed.

For full disclosure, I have occasionally referred to some instruments by names such as Chewbacca and Thundera ... and something from Norse mythology that I can't remember (not Mjolnir, though that would work). I identify with my basses more as tools (or weapons!) than as people.

Wouldn't it be creepy if a chef referred to his knives as "she"s? Or baseball players; Roy Hobbs had Wonderboy, not Wondergirl.

I don't mean to say people shouldn't give their basses female names. I think it's an interesting sociological phenomenon. (Uh oh, there goes my "day job" sneaking into this post -- clearly time to stop typing!)
