These days I am a big fan of the Ric hb1 pickups ... with 500k ohm volume pots and 1000k ohm tone pots they have a full low end, a real treble bite and a strong mid growl ...
I am also a fan of the modern high gain pickup ...

Jeff, or anyone. What would you consider an '86?
Modern, post-vintage, etc.? I'm lost in the terms and variables. I do like the way it sounds.

Well I ordered a new bridge high gain from RIC and it got here in 24 hours . It has the new adjustable poles and.........sounds alot like the 97 horseshoe . It is nice to have the cover out of the way . Im going to live with this bass for awhile and experiment with strings but I really expected it to sound like my 1977 4001 models . So far the 4004Cii with toasters nails my tone but fatigues my wonky shattered repaired wrist . Damn ! I will not give up my quest for a comfortable Rickenbacker bass . The V63 has the perfect body . The 4004Cii has the perfect tone and the 77 4001 had the perfect neck . Hmmmm....should I have bought a 4001S ? ? V to the bay ? here I go again

Send them all to Dale or Paul and have them combined into one bass that is just perfect for you!

"Tom, what is the "hot" toaster in terms of Ohms?"
I will check over the weekend, but I believe they are around 11.
"Jeff, or anyone. What would you consider an '86?
Modern, post-vintage, etc.?"
In my experience, I would say "post vintage". The original pups in my '89 were relatively weak at about 8k. I think it was about '90 that they beefed them up. Jeff?

I had the same results. Very happy with the sound, and the adjustable poles are a great upgrade.

"honey bunny" dark, mysterious, and otherworldly.
possibly a perfect song.

Barry, you probably need to unwind that high gain bridge pup to what the '77 bass had for ohms on its bridge pup. Wood (neck) differences also explain some of the tone difference.

by late 1986 to early 1990 the 4003 had the "modern features" ... no cap, 11k ohm pickups, modern truss rods, 250k ohm tone pots (1990), no grover tuners, no 2 piece pickguard, etc.

Spent an hour with the V playing through an ampeg B25B this morning ( ahh retirement ) . I think all is well with the new configuration . The tone is different but excellent . Had I known about this forum a few years ago I would have had my first 77 4001 (hall of shame bass) rebuilt by the likes of Dale or Paul . That would have been a narrow neck , high gain , no binding comfortable bass . The V63 is now very close and probably a better investment IF I should ever sell her . The quest for tone/comfort never ends and keeps me out of trouble

Barry,
If you get a chance try Ric-O-Sound into the B25's two channels, I run my 4003 this way with great results, my v63 and now c64 I run mono into it, but the 4003 with both channels running sounds lovely, I'm seriously thinking about a master volume control for the B25, superb little amp !!

Jim . Im down to the V and 4004 so no stereo basses at the moment . I bet that Ric-O-Sound is outstanding . Like you I also really like the B25 . Pleny of power and great tube warmth . Let me know if you do the master mod in the future .

I believe that the Hi-Gain pu's magnet is
a magnetized rubber, not a ceramic.
You can bend 'em into all sorts of shapes.
They work great at getting stuff out of the shower drain.....
I don't think ceramic magnets will bend....

Thanks for correcting my earlier post, John. Not sure why I said ceramic.
