Yeah, it seems i'm back on the forum in full force. Rick withdrawl and depression kept me away. I actually never settled the insurance claim-still pending. One of the sticking points was how much I was going to get for the Rick. Insurance wanted to give me enough to buy a new Rick and I was trying to convince them older one's are worth more especially in the condition mine was/is in. Problem solved + I don't have to give back money to the insurance co. Yes, I will tell them I got it back when in my posession. Glad I was patient as I was considering ordering a new 4003 L/H mapleglow and would have eventually. Hopefully Rick will never stop making lefties.

"This story helps renew my faith in humanity…. John you took the high road and my hat is off to you. Character is what you do when no one else would find out"

Reminds me of "Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are."

Glad to hear it's working out. Message to crooks: Don't mess with THIS forum!!!! :)

John and Abbott, this is an absolutely amazing story. Abbott, I know what you went through less the Rick bass being stolen. Around 12 years ago, some ******** broke into a prior house I was renting with a crow bar or wrecking bar at the front door (sound familiar?). They took the usual stuff from the living room and master bedroom (VCR's, video game, CD players, watches, high school ring with little value, etc.). They missed my '82 4001S and 1965 Hagstrom basses, as they were in the lowest level in their cases in the little bathroom. The house was a small tri-level. They also didn't get the computer, main stereo and other goodies - also on the lowest level. I was so lucky they didn't think to root around in every single room and level, or I might not have my 4001S anymore (see my avatar). They clearly wanted to get in and out as fast as possible. I've posted before about this on the Rick corporate forum. I wouldn't wish the experience on my worst enemy. I had dreams about it for such a long time, but my car (not stolen) would also end up stolen.
I had serial numbers for nearly everything, but nothing was recovered. I was younger then and didn't seriously look into pawnshops. The internet was just getting going in the mid-90's and I'm not sure ebay existed yet.

I own another house now, and put long deck screws in the dead bolt striker plate and do other things. I am seriously considering a security screen door, which I had installed at the house I rented after that break-in. I need a new screen door as it is. I also want to put a deadbolt in the door to my attached garage. My neighbor recently accidentally left her big garage door open and I was amazed to find out that she didn't lock the door between the house and garage. I told my other neighbor we should call the police to make sure all was well, and that is just what we did. It was a garage door adjustment problem. It popped up after she drove away. Someone could have waltzed right into her house.

John, glad you kept on top of things. You clearly did the right thing. Even if you only get back a percentage of what you spent you can sleep well, knowing you did the right thing. Sounds like you might get it all back.

Good tips about the images and serial numbers. I plan to put images on a memory stick on my key chain for a backup copy. Guess I'll be registering my Rics soon!

Wise words; I've never heard that before. Looks like a happy ending!

Well done, John, and congratulations Abbott!

I am so glad I changed my mind on the BIN on this one and didn't complete the sale. I haven't registered any of my Rics yet and this may have gone "unfound" even longer.

Karma is going to need one big truck to bring John's rewards on this one.

As someone who has had 2 Rics stolen (one never even reached me) it's nice to see a happy ending....

And what a great community of people Rickenbacker has created. Update: John went to his local authorities who decided they're somewhat clueless as to how to take good care of it while in their posession and that it's better off in John's knowledgeable, caring hands for now. Wise decision-I'd hate to see it come back with badge rash

A crowbar was used to bust through my back door,The slime who broke into my home sold a lot of my stuff to Bob-some I got back but obviously not all. Bob recorded the guys picture I.D at the time of purchase-only a few hours after the break in (the I'D was of someone who lived a few blocks away from me and having a prior record of break ins) but the D.A decided there was insufficient evidence as Bob's pawn could not pick him out of a line up.
Great Story.

Being from the Bronx..
It would be nice to hear this guy was found in a dumpster behind Bob's pawn....
Sorry I just hate crooks.
