The tops and sides are maple. Obviously using this stiff and tight-grained a wood, with such heavy bracing attached firmly to its back side, is going to compromise acoustic resonance. This will have benefits from the standpoint of feedback, but deaden acoustic output, too.
I've seen both early and later F bodies with backs of either solid maple species or hardwood-faced, lumber core plywood.

They don't sound any less banjo-y then your 330.parker_knoll wrote: interesting. how do they sound? acoustically as well, if possible.
I find my 330MG to be kind of banjolike

so maybe they abandoned the F series because they didn't sound any different to smaller hollowbodies like the 330, 360 and 381. No net gain.

I don't think so. I think they were expensive to produce, not big sellers, and the market for thinline sewer-cover guitars was owned by Gretsch.
