I think you'll really like the sound with high gains. My 4004Cii was the dullest sounding bass I've ever heard, even with rounds. Although I made some pretty radical cosmetic changes to the bass, sonically all I really did was put in the unbuttoned guitar high gains. What a difference!

I found a pair. Just have to get the okey dokey from the purse strings holder.

Edit: permission granted, order placed. I guess we'll know in a few days what it sounds like.

Be sure to get the new ones. They're a snap to unbutton with an Allen wrench. The older ones are a bit tricky. When you get the new pickups, you can just swap the covers and you'll have a pair of chrome HB1's leftover which will pay for most of your new pickups if you sell them. I may know someone who's interested in them too..

I checked with POR first to be sure they were the new pickups. They are. Should be fun going into this small town's hardware store with a pickup looking for the right sized screws. "What the heck's that thing?" :) I'll keep that thought in mind about the HB1s. Let me get through a gig first to be sure the single coils are what I'm looking for.

I wonder if the pole/button heads on early guitar high gains could just be cut off ?

Physically, I see where it could be done. You may not be left with a pretty product though. I don't see (looking at one right now) how it could be done without creating some kind of damage to the top of the pickup...scrapes and cuts.

No...the heat from the cutoff tool will melt the plastic.
Bruce, just remove one of the buttons and take THAT to the store as a sample, otherwise the dude with the tool belt wandering the aisles won't be able to tell what he's trying to match.

Awww, Dane...you know that's going to be half my fun in life that day - watching the guy with the toolbelt figure out which aisle he has single coil high gains stashed.

It was duller than the Mapleglo, wasn't it Dane? I knew I wasn't crazy.

Oh, now all my fun of making the Home Depot guy search for just the right piece is gone. Thank you for that leg work! This'll be too easy to find replacement screws now.

You can throw him a curve and ask where they are!

I figured the strings were just dead or that maybe your sweat killed them or something. Since I already had plans for the bass' transformation(which only took two days) I didn't bother trying to set it up with new strings or whip one of my master tunes on it. I think I still could've improved it, but we'll never know now.

I'm not sure why I would post this, since this is only my opinion. I would love to build a 4004L in jetglo with unbuttoned high-gains under toaster covers. VVT controls and a Hipshot chrome aluminum bridge. 4001 sound and modern contoured looks without the sharp binding and treble surround.
plus I dig the unique black TRC with chrome script on jetglo.

While a Hipshot bridge could be used on a 4004, even the widest string spacing puts the outer strings quite far from the edge of the fretboard. Not optimal for playing on the wider neck.
