I play my 4003 with the cover on. I played my old '77 4001 with the cover off, and would consider taking it off the 4003. But those sharp edges on the surround makes that not very practical for me. I play with a pick anyway mostly behind the surround, so the cover dosen't bother me in the least. I would never ever remove the horseshoes from my V63 or C64. To me they are part of those basses character. Plus they look so cool too!

Some surrounds will lay your flesh wide open indeed. I use a fine file lightly on the nastier edges. I do this sparingly as the exposed edge will tend to rust and cause the chrome to bubble. Perhaps a little clear nail polish afterwards would be a good idea.

haha, this is my first post!!!

First I thought "on", because so it is original.
But I had to take it off to balance the strings and I like this better.

So my answer:"OFF"!

Question, I just removed the horseshoes, but now I have a 3/16th gap between the bottom of the pickup and the plastic tray it sits on after fastening the pickup to it. what I mean is it's not snug.
should I use some washers?

The plastic "beauty cover" is a completely different animal than a pup with real horseshoes.

If you remove real "shoes", you'll have to come up with some type of spacer I'm afraid.
