The C64 and V63 guards are quite close, but they meet the outline of the front lower edge of the horseshoe pickup and the 60's guards did not.

My C64S guard has no hump and is pretty small around the control cavity.

My '92 and '98 V63 guards have no hump but are kinda big around the control cavity.

C64 and v63 guards are exact replicas of the 60's full-coverage guards, and have evaded the hump.
Huh, the one pic I have from Kevin of my V63 (bad angle) looks like it has the hump - I'll look when I get home for supper...

my c64 has one pickguard screw screwed half into the cavity. (I must admit I was a litle bit disapointed when I saw it.)

In my studies, I've seen pics of a few 60s guards that either lined up right at the surround or else overlapped it. Obviously many did not meet the surround, but a few did. I designed my new guard to replicate one that overlapped slightly, using Andy W.'s green RM as the main inspiration. '60s guards are truly all over the place, but none of them had the hump, and none that I've seen had the controls portion "blob" out all the way almost to the edge of the body like the V63 guards - but YMMV of course....

While I have seen some guards that have slightly overlapped the bridge pickup surround, I would attribute that to error rather than intent. With that in mind, I don't know what purpose would be served in replicating such an error other than to have the guard no longer sit flush on the body.

That just means it's more authentic in replicating the vintage look. Treasure it!

Yup, it has the major hump around the jack area. A V63, too.

Actually, some do. The truss rod channels in some 60s basses (my 69, my 64 and some 63's , and likely many more...)
go all the way to the treble PU rout. The guards meet the surround to cover this.

Hmm, you guys are right! I've noticed that the later 4003's with the hump dont play nearly as nice as the older ones without the hump.

Heh,,heh, heh. :D

Kinda makes you think what the hell we all argue about sometimes eh?

Here's a '92 V63 with the larger guard over the control area and the '71 4001 side by side.

The older guard looks so much better IMO.
