How's it sound?

Thanks, yeah, on that flooring Natalie is my "stealth" bass, haha!

As others have said, they're very versatile basses, between the coil-split and out-of-phase options. Despite being in a number of bands (two of which I play bass in), none have been gigging very much lately, so I only got to gig the bass for the first time a couple weeks ago:



With that band I went for a warm bassy sound, but I think with the roots rock side band I may try doing the "Ric" setting and see how it works.

Beautiful T-40 you have there. Looks like an early one to boot.

I've had a number of them, and still own two. I've seen that case before as well and for a short time in 78 they came with them.
I've also seen a square molded plastic case as well, like the early T-60's had, but mostly that H E A V Y chain saw type case.
Your bass also has the early "toaster type" pickups, and seems most folks feel they weren't as CRISP as the later ones where the magnet or BLADE type pickups were. I have both types and do notice a slight difference.

Yes, the prices have been creeping upwards, where I see quite a few selling in the $500.00 to $600.00 range if they are clean like yours is.

Great basses, highly under rated, lots of fun for sure!

Thanks Tony! Yes, the consensus seems to be that the toasters are warmer than the blades. I have toasters on my T-60 as well, but have never had an opportunity to do a head-to-head comparison between the 2 types of pups on either guitar or bass. My T-40 definitely has some nicks and dings, but she's in pretty good shape. When I got her the circuitry was a smidge messed up, so I took her in to my longtime buddy Tom, whom I've known for almost 30 years now (mainly from when our bands used to gig together; we were also bandmates for a short while more recently), and he fixed her right up. He works at the "old school" local mom and pop music store, Lipham's, where Tom Petty used to work back in the day, and where Bo Diddley used to have his gear repaired, etc. (One of Bo's rectangular guitars is up on the wall there).

There's so many sub-fora here I don't know where to go first!

Thanks John. I'm lucky, GAS doesn't hit me near as hard as it used to, if only because I'm just about out of space to store gear (if it weren't for my office, I would've been out of space long ago)! Of course, even at this stage I'm not immune to a great deal. Which is the only reason I own my Ric (620). In general, even used Rics are a bit rich for my blood. You don't wanna know how cheap I got mine for!
