I'M Laffin' at me...
One week ago, a new bass (Laredo) arrives...and I have not lost one iota of enthusiasm for it-
I had to tone it down a bit; only laid into it for about 3 hours today, 'cause I had to well, earn an honest (sorta) living...
And because of the likes of
YOU!
and YOU!...yeah, and YOU!
Quit hiding over there, you know who you are...
I can't get the notion that I NEED a 4003 outta my flimsy skull!
WTF?!!?
I repeat.
Just got new bass.
Perhaps best bass I've played.
Perhaps.
Must have another one of same maker...
Called Dealer, ready to whip out Credit Card with no reservation, again-
Because I'm very immature/irresponsible- I'll have Nancy Lee, my Lady, vouch for this- A teacher of Mathematics, she feels that I amuse her, somewhat like a bug might, or a circus clown at times...
She shakes her head in disbelief at activity like this, and often thinks I spen time looking at - well, you know- on the
'net. She says- "Are you looking at Naked Basses again?"
Well, kinda yes I am.
SO this Dealer WON'T take my CC for the SALE- He doesn't care' He MAY do a wire transfer; if he feels like it, 'cause apparently there are minions who will buy this bass post-haste.
See this is new to me.
ANd it makes me want that frickin' FG 4003 even more.
Must be the plan.
Well, I'll know tomorrow, if he is gracious enough to take my money-
I get it.
That's the issue here...
Must...have... 4003....Know ... that I will love it....Take.... pick-up...cover ....off.
Plug ...into....my ... Mesa Boogie PHN212 4-ohm with custom Wine Taurus covering and LMII LE, sound....good.
Play ....Etta James.....
Maybe Joe Louis Walker......On.....Rickenbacker.....4003.... MapleGlo.....
NOBODY busts my chops like I do-
Believe me I know I'm going insane. I have my reasons...

The white pearloid pickguard material I have is the same used for the FW inlays, so it looks real nice in the flesh, so to speak.

Well, If dealer comes thru, it's gonna be FG; if not I may hunt for MG, I got a line on one.
And I know how awesome the MG is, despite it being merely a simple coat of varnish over a piece of wood-nothing more-no time in the spray booth with loving attendant...
NOT-
I can style my hair in the sheen of my 4004 MG- It is so beautiful and smooth and perfect.
Masterpiece. I can envision this MG with BINDING and a nice pickguard and the controls on a 4003-
I would apply this bass in a manner which ...
Well never mind.
I really am digging the FireGLo, because transluscents, whether bursts or clear, appeal to me-
I have a fantastic Blonde ASAT, BE board, TNG, natural Wood Binding, NO dots- Love it-
ANd I found once a 1969 P-Bass that had the feel and mojo of the Gods- Playable, and the neck was/is Fender's finest creation ever..ever.
But this bass was thrashed- Rusted bridge, Crazy-*** tuners, pup shot, I took it home and gave it LIFE-
SD 1/4 lb pup, BLACK trims- BAII Bridge, new pg, black hardware-Fender tuners, string retainer, re-fret, back of neck sanded down, light tung-oil, Oh yeah--one other issue-
The bass had been SPRAY-PAINTED flat black. SPRAY painted- and dinged to hell. It was hilarious.
MY tech thought that after restoration to the perfect player's bass, we should leave the body be, and he could even beat it down some more with a hammer.
But not-
I wanted restoration, and we had the great Wilkins here do it- I had ANY option of color I wanted-
I told him I wanted WOOD- He said they'd have to see what was up after they took the spray-paint off.
As mojo had it, it had a real nice Alder grain, actually, so they were able to leave it alone for me, just smooth it and lightly tung-oiled-It is a thing to behold, even tho the finish and woods don't even approach what Rickenbacker does. Apples/Oranges in this respect as bass guitars.
The moral being-
I like natural, so MG would be cool especially the way Rickenbacker does Natural.
But if I''m "allowed" to buy the FG-
That's gonna be it.
If not---we'll have to see.

BAH,
Jetglo....FINGERPRINT GLO, the damn thing might as well be made of plastic.
Why take a beautiful piece of wood, that was a living, breathing thing and slop a smothering layer of black ooze over it that only show's fingerprints?!?!
It's so, BORING!
Grain, GRAIN, G R A I N is where it's at. It makes your bass stand out. Take five new Jetglo RIc basses and set them side by side. Can you tell the difference? NOPE, all the same. NOW, take a RIC that shows the grain like MG/FG/AG/AFG/Wal/ATG/etc and you see a beautiful grain pattern that is one of a kind. No two alike.
Jetglo=BAH!
IMHO

tony i tend to feel the same way-i love to see all that lovely grain-fg and mg are THE classic finishes....but i still would love to see a custom painted (fiesta red or maybe pelham blue) 4000 someday. see how well the custom color idea worked for mr. squire.....

I agree that FG can be a very desireable finish, and that there are no two exactly the same. Some have just a ring of color around the outside with very little, if any, blending of color from the outside to the inside. To me, these look like someone's half fast attempt at finishing their first guitar in FG. On the other hand, some have a very professional looking finish with excellent blending of colors like this AFG listed
here (thanks Jeff!) on the forum.
Since I had to buy my bass sight unseen, I went with a finish that I could depend on being right. And after all, black and chrome look sexy! Shoot. Evey time I get my bass out at a gig, I can barely fight off all the women. (OK, that was a lie)

Yeah, I'll have to pull for the Mapleglo, especially if you can find one like this:
Yup, GRAIN is where it's at!
