Some great titles here so far. As big a Beatles fan as I am, probably my favorite rock movie is "The Commitments." I really enjoy AHDN and Help!, but I tend to think of them both as extended music videos.

"Beyond the Valley of the Dolls"--c'mon, the Strawberry Alarm Clock! And the girl band at the center of the movie, the Carrie Nations.

Also, "Head".

Man, I'd forgotten that surrealist messterpiece. The Monkees committing commercial suicide on film...

To misquote Douglas Adams: It's a great film if you like that kind of thing!

Purple Rain is a good flick. Some of the movies mentioned in this thread aren't rock movies IMHO, just movies with rock soundtracks.

Good call on Purple Rain, Phlem'...but I feel like you're 'picking on my picks', if I can read between your lines. I'm sure the boundaries of a genre like 'rock movies' will be a bit blurry for everyone. For an (admittedly) controversial example, my own list would have to include Apocalypse Now...hey, it's got a memorable placement of "Suzie Q" in it...

For me, a 'rock movie' has to capture something of what was going on in the larger culture to bring about and shape rock's evolution. Naturally, any concert flick gets included by means of direct representation, but are you gonna tell me that The Magic Christian doesn't have a 'rock' attitude to go along with the soundtrack?

And speaking of my personal list (and I was reminded of it a few minutes ago whilst watching the circling helicopters and contemplating President Obama's arrival at the Museum half a mile from where I'm sitting), I want to urge everyone to see Putney Swope at their earliest convenience...

By your logic, I have to include River's Edge. not a movie about rock but certainly the soundtrack to my teen years...and now.
