Yes, but 'effect' has also now become a verb, e.g. "We hope to effect change though our new policies". To me it's one of those errors that becomes acceptable due to chronic use. 'Appropos' is one that is often used incorrectly as well; it is not synonomous with 'appropriate' but a lot of people use it that way. It gets on my *****, almost as much as the incorrect employment of 'you're' and 'it's'.

Something that bugs me is when a person says: "My 'xxxx' needs fixed!" What happened to: "My 'xxxx' needs to be repaired"!

Well, in that sentence, the actual operating verb of the main verb phrase is "hope," not "effect," because the action, "hope" directly follows the subject, "We." (enough commas for ya, Paul? !) But that is beside the point.

The rules of prescriptive grammar are arbitrary. Therefore, "incorrect" grammar can become "correct" grammar when enough people agree that it is "correct." This can often happen by people refusing (or neglecting) to point out the changes.

Another one is 'moot,' which used to mean the exact opposite of how it's used.

1. open to discussion or debate; debatable; doubtful: a moot point.

Two more: Buying something off somebody, and "itching" as in, "can somebody itch my back (my daughter uses this one).

The itch is the sensation; the scratch is the relief.

Has anyone noticed the loss of double consonants in words like "labeled" (used to be "labelled")?

Actually, that's rather an Old English construction. "You will be thank yourself later" should read "You will bethank yourself later."

I hate it when people use "they" as a neuter singular pronoun. I also don't like people using the female pronoun as the neuter. This is pretty common in baby material (look at the back of a Gerber jar the next time you're in a store).


I have wondered how close a 330/12 with Toaster pickups would mimic the sound of a vintage 360 (v64 or c63). For me, I don't think the cost of the reissues is justified. I'm looking far out into the future and things may change, but I imagine a 330/12 would and make me happy. I do hope to have the chance to test both instruments one day, though!

How about "elusion," "allusion," and "illusion"? It seems like every time I see variants of either of the first two, it's being misused where the third should be.

Which one? Is your "geetar thangie" a 330, or a 360v64?

That'd be the V64, sorry! I was in such a rush to help the thread drift right into the iceberg that I failed to specify....
