True, but they still have plenty of go when they get the wind up them!

John states:
I am caught by the tone Squire gets. The reason I don't have a real Precision bass is because with my style of playing and preferred amp settings it sounds too much like a Rick and then can't justify owning it. So it is mostly for the sound. Over the years here finding out all the songs and groups that used a Rick bass that I always loved the songs, the Rick basses are the common denominator. I found/find that really interesting. My Ricks fulfill the sound in my head.
It's funny you say that.

Years ago when I played a lot (before I took about a 15 year hiatus) and I had my 4001, I knew the sound I loved and that was the Ric.

Within the last couple of years I've *wanted* to get that sound back and after the kidlet became interested in guitars (and eventually bass) I knew that the Ric was what I was looking for.

So I went online to take a look at what one would cost and about passed out. I paid $600 new for the Ric I had and wasn't prepared for the cost change. So I waited and waited and waited.

Finally found one that I couldn't let get away.

Long story short: the SO sits on my laptop in my office at times and piddles on the computer while I play bass. She's mostly in her own little world as I'll often try to say something to her and she doesn't even hear me.

She was doing something on this laptop recently and I was just fingering the frets here and there playing different melodies that popped into my head. She stopped what she was doing suddenly and said, "Wow, you can really tell that you get what you pay for in a higher quality guitar."

I just smiled knowingly and left it at that... ;)

These last few days I keep wanting to play along with 'Themes for Great Cities' by Simple Minds. I think the original was a Precision but it sounds great with a growly Rickenbacker too. I also like to play along to Smokey Robinson's Tears of a Clown. Completely different sound and style but the Rick can handle it all 8)

Becky wrote:I enjoy playing lots of pieces of music, and it's really hard to narrow it all down, but the ones that most often bring a smile to my face would be:

Rush - Xanadu
Rush - Jacob's Ladder
Yes - Something's Coming
Yes - Close to the Edge
Yes - Soundchaser
Genesis - Watcher of the Skies

'Mainstream' is my middle name, of course.
*jaw drop*

You can play "Sound Chaser"?

What's your secret? Insane talent?

Every one I play :D

I do not Like Yes, I do not Like Rush, I do Not Like Motorhead. Ok, well maybe "A" song or 2 here and there but these bands being famous for having a Ric in it do nothing for me. My favorite band The Doors doesnt have a bass player....go figure that ...

Anyway

Sunshine of your love

Too Rolling Stoned

You Really Got me

Hand of Doom

Ironman

Child in time

The trooper

Electric funeral

Fairies wear boots

Sweet Home Alabama

Cant you see

Whole lotta rosie

To name a few

Not all the tunes below were originally cut on a Rickenbacker bass, but hey they sound great on a Rick nevertheless!

I play some of the tunes below in our band (The ones with the * - the others I just dig jamming on my own.). We do a set of '50's in which I play a P-Bass, a set of '60's in which I play a Hofner, and a set of '70's in which I now play my 4000 Burgundyglo. All the sets are fun, but I can't wait for the third set!

Beatles:
Penny Lane
Hello Goodbye
She Came In Through The Bathroom Window

McCartney:
Too Many People

Doobie Brothers (Tiran Porter played a Rick for a while in the early days):
Jesus Is Just Alright*
China Grove*
Long Train Running

Tower Of Power (Yes a Rick can be funky):
What Is Hip?
You're Still A Young Man
Drop It In The Slot
There Ain't Nothin' Stoppin' Us Now
A Little Knowledge Is A Dangerous Thing

Steppenwolf:
Magic Carpet Ride*

Looking Glass:
Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)*

The Grass Roots:
Temptation Eyes*

Bee Gees (Maurice Gibb has been seen playing a Rick bass on occassion):
More Than A Woman*

Andy Gibb:
I Just Want To Be Your Everything*

Barry White:
You're The First, My Last, My Everything*

George McRae:
Rock Your Baby*

Queen:
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
My Sharona

Actually, the Doors had a bass player in the studio, many if not most of their studio recordings have electric string bass on them. Give the albums a good listen, you'll see!

Robin Trower's bassist played a Ric?

I play Sunshine of Your Love on every bass I touch as one of the first things. Not sure why, I just do. ;)

Oh, and Dan? Queen didn't do My Sharona last I checked, unless they did a cover of it. ;)

That's correct and a few are pretty well known players as well. In the studio, they used session players like Jerry Scheff, Lee Sklar, Larry Knechtal, Ray Neapolitan and even guitarist Lonnie Mack. Did any of them play a Rick? Don't know.

Nevermind, Dan. I just noticed you said not all of those songs were done on Rics. I'm blind some days. ;)
