I like playing both, and feel good about what I do play on both, for being a hack.

The exception to the rule for guitarists is blues and jazz players. They are A-O.K. in my book. Rock-based lead players... those are people the people that just make me grate my teeth in annoyance! And yet I'm friends with so many of those sociopaths.

I've had good relationships with rock guitarists, but never have I been fast friends with them like my six-stringed jazz cats.

As a lead guitar player, I lean heavily towards the bluesy/jazzy side of the equation ............ but before i go too far with this thought, I will continue to consider that respect is earned, It is not given lightly.

"Respect is earned"=truer than any stereotype.

I refuse to believe that people choose instruments based on personality.

Look at the Beatles, for example:

Bass - Paul: egomaniac by many accounts, the "pretty one"

Rhythm - John: tortured rocker

Lead - George: introspective, tried to keep out of the spotlight

Many guitarists I know have one of 2 problems when they try to play bass: they either dumb it way down to a root-on-the-one kind of thing, or they try to be Eddie Van Bassplayer with no regard for the timing and rhythym of the song. I have met very few that understand the bassists role well enough to be considered good bass players. That being said, there are some notable exceptions, like Ron Wood. Keith Richards is also a pretty good bass player. Many of my fovorite Stones bass lines were actually played by Keith (Shattered and Sympathy for the Devil immediately come to mind). I actually find his bass playing to be more interesting than Bill Wymans, and he really has a great feel, not guitar player like at all. It could be said that for the majority of his time in the Stones, Bill Wyman was the 3rd best bass player in the band!
