The only reason I would ever even buy a Gibson would be to get a decent mahogany instrument. I would not go for one made out of maple--that's Ric's thang. Like Ric instruments, the "original formula" for Gibsons gave them a unique sound unlike the other bread and butter stuff and set them apart. It doesn't seem wise to get away from that.

I don't like this mentality. It's dangerous.

What if the Beatles had stuck with their early Beat-music sound because it's what made them famous and set them apart?

I think constantly pushing the bar is a great quality. The results may not always be spectacular, and you'll probably fall flat on your face several times, but eventually you'll stumble upon something wonderful that you would never have achieved had you decided to stay in the box.

Touche. But I guess for a guy like me--a Gibson outsider--I don't care for poor innovation since I've barely experienced the original awesomeness. If I was owned many I could totally see feeling that way. I do feel that way about Ric quite often.

I'm a total Gibson guy when it comes to guitars, loved my old LP's but my go-to was an Explorer. No love for the Explorer? I know there is not a "raw power" explorer....but...
Oh yeah, and I love Thunderbirds too. Need a 5-string one.
