Chrome neck p/u surround on the S/8 and black on the 4003.

Actually, the 4003S/8 has a toaster in the neck position, and I got one of the plates from Pickguardian for the bridge pickup, while the 4003 has the original black bridge pickup surround.

Um, yes, but it's still the difference between a chrome and a black neck p/u surround, even though on a toaster I guess you'd call it a p/u cover instead of a surround. My eyes weren't sharp enough to spot that little metal part that makes it a toaster. Point taken!

As far as I remember, a toaster is actually a guitar pickup with 6 pole pieces, so it's more than just the cover. For an 8-string the guitar pickup could actually work better, though this is just a guess.

I think I got some great sounds with both basses - hoping to do some more editing of the sound clips.

Quick question - when did Rickenbacker stop offering black trim as an option? I tried searching for the answer but no luck. I know I've seen it referred to before. And this thread seemed as good a place as any to ask again!

Hmm, I remember it happening, but not when. I think it was when they discontinued TUR, but I'm not sure.

Ron dates the start of BT as around 1974 here (an earlier post in this thread).

Judging from entries in the Register, BT was first offered 1973/74 and was not offered after 2002.

TUR was not offered after 2004.

Nice! I like the way it has black binding on the body but white binding on the neck.

Finally made a loud rough mix of one of the tracks I recorded recently, working title: black walrus

It's the 8-string running into the nex MXR octave pedal and a Budda Phat Bass distortion, plus Alembic F2-B preamp and some studio compressor, with my friend Greg DeGuglielmo on drums.


It's long (at least 8 minutes?) and completely improvised in the studio.
