Have you seen this photo I recently posted in another thread? It is from NAMM 2010.

Jack Cassidy would have to be Number One for me; both melodic and VERY powerful; took the Airplane albums to a completely different level.

Chris Hilman of the Byrds hasn't been mentioned; very melodic and added a jazzy tinge to records like "Eight Miles High" and "So You Wanna Be A Rock 'n Roll Star".

Paul Samwell-Smith is a guy who doesn't get enough credit, he made a lot of the Yardbirds records just take off and fly...

Dave Pegg of Fairport Convention is another strong bassist.

-Jeff Scott, who can add a complete run to a song where there was merely a single note on the recording, and have it sound completely natural.
-Ross Hansen, who's flown half way across the country to jam with us twice.
-Pat Hayes, who played bass until he literally almost fell over onstage at the last jam, and brought tollhouse cookies!

I have to say, I just checked out that Pino clip (yeah, with two other guys ) four times through. That groove is very hip and Pino isn't just in the pocket, he is the pocket. He's got one of those rare combination talents in music: tight yet fluid. Like a waterfall in a straightjacket.

I made my wife park herself in front of the speakers for that. One day shortly after we met, she confessed she never really listened to bass lines. That all changed when I turned her on to McCartney (she was floored when realizing how different Beatle songs are when you're actually listening to the bass lines). Anyway, she was listening to the Mayer/Pino bit and just had a big grin on her face. "Yeah, that guy gets it."
