I agree with Paul Yan! You owe the girl a set of bass strings - with a new bass attached!

More for what it's worth stuff - my '68 4001 MG has the same routing coming off the neck pickup cavity, and also has a horseshoe pickup. Every stock '68 4001 I've seen has a horseshoe pickup, so it would definitely behoove you to keep your eyes peeled for one.

Rather late here, but....

No question, a genuine bass. Refinished, (but still looking good ...it could have been JG ) early 70's bobbin installed, and, as mentioned, the bridge issues. Good to see the stock TRC, tuners, pots, and wiring are intact though. Those rods have taken the usual beating that we usually see, and may need to be pulled and straightened out eventually, but what a great find. You don't see many Deluxe's from this year either...

Well, sir - that will be the first '68 I've seen sans horseshoe pickup. I notice it's a December bass. RIC must have started phasing out the HS around that time. I thought this was your bass, Andy, but I see that it's in the UK. ?????

The 68 is still here with me in Fla. Some have flown back with me over the years, but the majority reside here most of the time these days.

IIRC the Dec 68 is the first bass that has the hi-gain that we know is 100% stock, although I remember a MG 4000 from Nov 68 that had one as well. As discussed here before, anytime from late fall '68 on, a bass may have the hi gain, but, as ever, YMMV. Case in point, my old Feb 69 4001 had a horseshoe, whilst Teeder's 4000, one serial before it, had the hi gain!

Right? Sort of like the phasing out of the full-width inlays and CB binding between 72-73... there was that overlap of some basses dated later still having the early goodies, while some with later serials had the newer smaller fins and straight white binding.

Florida's all the further you would get with the no import/export laws in Cuba imposed since the 1950s. A Rickenbacker would indeed be a rare find there!

By the way, I mistyped my earlier statement about the 72-73 transitional period. For clarity's sake:
