Curious- did the last "original style" not reissue 4001 leave the factory in 1984?

See pic below. My friend and I had a very mini confluence in Hooksett, NH the other day. The pic also kind of illustrates the body horn issue discussed here.

His Jetglo 1983 is # WC XXX, March 1983. It has original Grovers on it, no drillings for the other more modern tuners. It has the cap still in it, and has ground round strings on it. Has the classic 4001 honk of the 70's and sounds much like my 75 did, before I took the cap out of mine, and now mine sounds like a MONSTER. Trying to get him to do the same It's not a set neck, it's neck through construction. Neck is slightly thicker that my #1 in the pic, the 75 4001 # OJ72xx in the archives. The Fireglo 4003 is mine as well.


Were the Grovers being installed on 4001's up to the end? Were only the Model 4000's set neck near the end? I used to know this stuff but it's been a while since I've been a regular poster....so....

Well, don't hate me, it's not mine. It belongs to someone in New York. I just went to the registry, searched for 4001 from 1968 and looked for one that had a decent image. Here's the entry:

Nice. It's amazing how much the natural finish has taken on that 'golden hue.' Look at the picture where the pick guard has been removed. Amazing!

Open up the image itself (from the "Download Large Format" section) and copy the URL, then use the "Img" button above the text area when posting a reply and paste the URL between the square bracketed "img" and "/img". Then it looks like this:

maybe they're trying an optical illusion by moving the horns back, the neck pickup inch spacing won't look so far away from the fretboard ???

David, the Grovers seemed to be standard fit for much of the '70s and into the '80s, and they can even be found on some 4003 models in the early '80s.

The set neck was standard on 4000 and 4001S models from about '72 to the end of production in the early '80s. Some 4000 instruments of this era have routing for the second pickup underneath the pickguard, and realistically, this was a common "chassis" for the two models. A bass started as a 4001S could be finished as a 4000 without fuss. Just a different pickguard and fewer pots and wires.

The contours are pretty much the same, so is the positioning of the hardware. Only real difference is the thinner (shorter on the V63) horns
