I have yet to find evidence otherwise that he owns a 340.

Alright guys; it could very well be a 340, but I'm basing my opinion on the fact that I have never seen another video or photo with him and a six string 340.

Please, point out a 340; I don't see one in any photos of Peter's collection.

Well, this was over 25 years ago. And how do you know he owned it? Maybe he borrowed it for the show. If he did own it, is he required to keep it and post photos of it now? I've never seen Mike Mills playing that bass in any other shows, either.

If you look carefully between 0:08 and 0:11 in this video from the same show you can see that there are only 6 tuners on the back of the headstock. Listen to the tone--that's not a distorted 12-string. There are many other videos from this show where you can also see the headstock from multiple angles.

And if you really want to hear the difference, here is one from the SAME show where Pete switches to a JG 360-12 for So. Central Rain. Note the jangle, chime, and headstock differences. He's playing through the same rig. I rest my case.

A few years ago there was a video up on youtube of R.E.M. playing somewhere in Europe in the mid-80's and Pete was playing a 320 or 350. This was all early in their career and perhaps they didn't bring amps and guitars when they went to Europe. It's not like they were huge stars back then. The first time I saw them in 1986 was in a hall that would seat ~3000 people and there may have been 1000 people there. The next year they were packing much bigger venues.

No contest, just us Rick and R.E.M. fans having a look at some history (perhaps with a bit of passion).

The beginning of this clip is cool because he switches back to the 340-6 and starts playing with no effects and then at 0:15 he steps over and stomps his chorus. Pretty cool to hear the range of tones he gets and at least partly how he gets them.

That Rockpalast show was a classic.

Sorry guys, it's a 340; I reckon. Peter is my hero; his playing and gear was an obsession of mine for many years, and I doubt you'll find anyone else with the knowledge I have of him (I'm not vain; just sure of myself). I'm afraid I'm so sure of myself that I forget even experts make mistakes.

I'm just confounded as to why he'd use a 340 throughout a whole show, never have evidence of using it for another, when he had his 360/12 AND his Telecaster on that tour!

If you think what's shown in the picture is all he owns... oh well...

As far as I remember, he played several other Rics on that tour which he didn't use at any later date. Either there was something with his main guitar, or it just wasn't there for that show.

I'm just a bit confused why the SG Junior's trusty, like the other instruments named aren't reliable? Scott plays the SG Junior these days.

Did you read my last post?

He didn't use the 360/6 for the Fables tour, but has for all other tours. I'm guessing he was trying new things out, trying to protect his favorite guitar, etc.

Do you have a problem with the word "trusty?" It's just a phrase, man. My main guitar happens to be an SG, and I like it when I see my hero playing one. Is that okay?

For that matter, I saw Scott playing Gretsch and Eastwood guitars on the Accelerate tour. Peter used the SG for some stuff on Monster and the subsequent tour for the album.

Guy,

No offense intended. I thought we were having a spirited discussion.

It is not? Däng, I thought we could win something here :P

Peter used his 360 JG during the Preconstruction tour if I remember the pictures correctly. As for most shows we don't have any pictures, thus saying he did not use it for the whole Fables tour is a lot of generalisation based upon some media performances!

But, remember he also used the 360/12 Jetglo! Peter said he has used the 360 for all tours except one in the mid-eighties. Now, I have pictures of him with it in '86 (LRP), '87, and '89 (Green tour), and I haven't seen him with the 360/6 for the Fables tour yet, but am open to any evidence to the contrary.

Here's one from 1985 in Germany where he has a 350 (or 320--hard to tell--can't count frets or see dots in the ****** video).

I saw REM at Radio City during their Fables tour, and, although it was long ago, remember a 360 JG being played for most of the show. I think I would remember if it wasn't, since half the reason I went was to see Peter Buck play a Rickenbacker - and the 360 specifically. But no pics! Maybe it was a 330 on that tour?

I just found my copy of the "souvenir" booklet from the Fables tour. There are only 2 pics of a 330 JG in the booklet. One of a small child playing it and one of Bill Berry playing it. The only other photos of Peter Buck playing a guitar are either acoustic or the Tele. No pics of a 360.

He played a 330 a lot in the early days. If you look at their performance on The Tube, he had a 330, I believe.

Makes me want a vintage 330. I love those horns.

Ain'tGotNoPokemon wrote:it takes practice to play that 12 string fluently too! Hence he played his 12 string McGuinn model through an entire show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2ocaJ36 ... re=related
I thought I'd save this quote as Peter Buck apparantly had a McGuinn a couple of years before the model was introduced
