Jack, have you used the height screws on the mute to lower it down more? The curve of the mute assy. should mimic the strings "curve" so it hits them all at the same time, so an adjustment to the curve might be in order. To get to the mute pad you have to remove the strings, remove the bridge, remove the tailpiece, then unscrew the mute assy. out of the tailpiece. A major project but not hard or daunting.
