Just wanted to say thanks to all that contributed to this thread. I was able to follow these procedures to remove, recondition and reinstall my truss rods with no problems. Was able to adjust the relief on my neck so that it plays perfectly for me. Thanks again.

Glad to hear it worked for you too! I had a gig back in February right after setting up my 4001 and could not stop smiling the whole night because my bass was so easy to play! :D

Yes, easy to play! I just played La Villa Strangiato better than I think I ever have. It's amazing really the difference a well set-up bass makes.

Tape is for the old hairpin rods. Shrink tube is for the newer, compression-only rods.

Be sure to use the proper technique when adjusting the old style rods. It is important to know that those rods only hold the neck they don't move it. Bad technique causes the rods to bend like that. Always pull the neck back away from the strings before turning the nuts.
