What is MW?
Mark Walker.

That's a surround I got from Mark a couple years ago. It's reshaped from a Lap-steel, which is pretty fitting, because Mark also re-worked the lap-steel HS that is in this bass.

Thanks, Jake. I'll be able to tell you better late next week when it gets here.

VERY nice! Wow... it's always an uplifting sight to see one of these old beauties brought back to life. Larry did a great job getting it all together and topping it off with that gorgeous finish. It's great to see those pieces I made come together as a whole unit, too. I did that surround, what... like, 3 years ago? And just did the bobbin last week. Glad they ended up together!

Can't wait to hear/see the sound check video!

Here's a close-up detail shot of the bobbin to show my "handywork". Thanks for the lip-service, Mr. Teed!

For the record, I don't have a stockpile of old lapsteel bobbins just lying around, nor do I go out of my way to acquire them. This kind of conversion is a touchy issue for some, (particularly the lapsteel players,) so I just take on the special projects as they come up. Not that I do the work begrudgingly; I enjoy seeing these old basses resurrected. A sacrifice for the greater good, I like to think!

Next time, see if you can leave the 40+ year old dust on the bobbin!

HA HA! Hard to say if ALL that dust was 40+ years old, but next time I'll be happy to dirty it up for you! Funny though - I did my best to keep those poles dirty looking, especially with that green dust that some of them had. Hard to keep that stuff intact when shipping back & forth, though. Which reminds me - I still have the two extra poles I need to send you...

Have to give credit where credit's due - Mark did an outstanding job on rewinding the coil. Kevin's brother, Mark, took it for a whirl yesterday in my shop and it sounded outstanding, particularly the 'shoe.

Yeah, he told me I'd be selling the V63 once this one arrives.

The green deposit will be an Oxidization of the Cadmium plate on the screws, , I like the paint/fixer on the underside of these bobbins too, which I think is ground lead paste, mmm, they don't make stuff like they used to, all the best things in life have been carcinogenic. It's increasingly more difficult to get stuff Cad plated these days, unless of course you're in the Aircraft industry :) .
