How recently? I've been checking their websites
regularly addictively for the past few moths and they seem to have only 4003s.
It was a couple weeks ago. Then one day it wasn't there. It had gold hardware and I think the finish would be called Fireglo, they have a couple guitars (650s?) that have the same finish.
When I first got interested in Rickenbackers in 1978, I knew who the dealers were in Canada and in Colorado (Melody Music, and Long and McQuade-they always had a good selection), where my family was, but these days I honestly don't know what dealers to track for inventory. Wildwood seems to have a good selection, although I got my 4003 from Sam Ash and my 330 from Willcutt.

Morgan, you've just described my 2004 Cii!
I also have a 2004 Laredo,"slightly" thicker feeling neck strung with roundwounds. Both excellent basses! I played a new 4004 and new 4003 back to back recently, and the necks felt identical. (Slimmer, and more rounded, compared to my 4004's)
So I guess an older one would be what I should look for. I'd love to check out a 4004. Hopefully they'll keep making them.

I don't have a 4004, but i DID get 2ea HB1's (the 4004 pickups?) from the RIC boutique about 7 years ago. They are in my Fenderbird.
Great full sounding pickups- maybe slightly scooped, but DEAD SMOOTH output, and hot at that. No compression needed, I play thru an Ampeg SVT-350 SS head and 1x18 cabinet.
GREAT pickups for project basses IMO.

Interesting thread. Do most of those interested in the 4004 only consider the 4 string models?

I'd consider a 5 string model if they were available...

I don't need any extra strings. I own a harp.

But is it a Rickenbacker? I've actually got a 26 string Rick, so I guess I'm covered for extra strings as well, but it's not a bass...
