Question about Drop D tuning

I've come to realize after all these years doing live gigs that 99 people out of 100 have no idea if we are playing something perfectly as recorded. They just need to recognize the song.

+1. And the one guy who does notice is always someone you really don't want to spend a lot of time talking to!

Ah.....the Line 6 Variax. I've been trying to turn out guitar player onto one of these for a few weeks now. He's had ONE electric guitar since 1975, and it's a Guild S300. It's a really cool guitar and all that, but it doesn't sound good on everything. We do songs that are all over the map, and even though he's got the prerequisite rack mounted processor with a floorboard controller, his guitar sounds the same on EVERYTHING! Meanwhile our drummer has Roland V-Drums, and I have 2-3 basses at practice, as well as my GK stereo rig and Zoom B3 pedal. Even our singer can sound like different people, but there's our guitarist with his ONE guitar and ONE sound. Ahhhhh! Anyway...rant over.

I'm really an old-school purest at heart, but when I hear a Broadcaster through a tweed bassman and then look up to see this black Variax with no amp in front of me I just grin and shake my head. IMO, if you’re a guitarist in a band doing covers, you're doing yourself and your band a disservice if you don't at least give one a try. Or you can carry around a truck load of guitars.
