I generally love the look of gold plexi, especially on the S models and particularly with mapleglo. Somehow I ended up with three black basses. Actually two black, one jetglo.
On the two black ones the white plastic against black always seemed shocking, even offensive, so I replaced one with gold anodized and the other with tortoiseshell, but the jetglo seems right with white. To me it seems to convey a Northern European sensibility. Even more so on the walnut basses, where it reminds me of Scandinavian architectural designs and furniture from the '50s through the early '70s.
My niece's boyfriend recently acquired his dad's midnight blue 330/12 from the nineties which has the black hardware and plastic, and on that it is very cool. There were lots of cars in that era with the same look.
Even though I can understand having to do a trade in with the old trc, it does seem like all of these options should be available from the Rickenbacker boutique.
