I put a 'step' into the route so that it's down .22" from the face, but still .263" from the bottom of the pocket.
The amount of material removed was just enough to clear the Toaster cover and back plate, minus the front 2 edge pickup cover screws.
The neck on this bass was a total mess, initially. After I was done with straightening and fret leveling, I decided to keep going and did this mod. If it caves in over time, then I'll plane off the fret board, fill the pickup routes, then re-route for 4002 pickup placement and put on an ebony fret board. Seriously--it wouldn't be the end of the world. For now, the bass is stable and has been since January.
