I am selling my 1968 4001 to an un-named collector ... If I win this one I will remove the horeshoe and sell it to somebody who wants it and I will replace the tuners and bridge and maybe string it BEAD or EADG and use it occaisionally ... those 60's basses sound awesome once the old hosreshoe is removed and a modern high gain is put on it ...

we will worry about that If I win ... beware the snipers ... but that is a good 60's bass for me because it is missing the serial number ... so I can put in modern pickups and not feel guilty ...
The old horseshoes are really pretty ... but a 60's bass with modern pickups gives you a real good Squire and McCartney sound all in one bass

Looks like both Marc and Jeff lost out on this one! Who is nbvbn? One of us?

I just congratulated him whoever he is. IMO the pickup is worth $1500. I really wanted to soup up a 4000. Now I can think about that 4080 a little more.

Not sure but, those look like 1.5" to me. they need to be 1.25". Better check with the seller before you buy. I bought the same one with 1.25" ones for around $350. $888 is top dollar.
Remember, you still need bobbin's. A high gain will probably run $100 plus.

They are 1.25". At least they look like they are as I have never seen anything but 1.25" horseshoes in that style surround.

Approaching $2K for a refinished bass body without a serial number. That,s more than I thought it would go for. Even with the original horseshoe that seems a lot. Bet the sellers a happy guy! The lap steels p/ups are still the way to go here if you want a horseshoe. I picked one up for $80 on E bay a couple of years ago for a forum member, but they have caught on now.

I was going to turn it into a replica of the "wings bass play by PM" I would have replaced all of the hardware and sold the horseshoe pickup ...

Well, According to Vintage Guitar Player price guide, from 1960-1963 your looking at $3200-$3600 on the low side in excellent condition. My feeling was it would go for about half that, with the pickup being the prize.
Remember when you buy the steel horseshoes the bobbin doesn't help you.
My plan for that bass was to either soup up the bobbin, and gold powdercoat all the hardware. Wasn't sue what I was going to do with the body. Guess I can do that with the next 4000 that turns up.I just liked the idea of having a 60's Ric. They don't grow on trees.
Seth.. you owe us pics...
