John, yeah you have regular reverse tuners on your 79 which makes you experience what most righties consider their keys turning the right way if you can understand my convoluted explanation. You must be used to what would be reverse tuners to anyone else, because they put right handed tuners on lefty basses I would guess from your experience. I have reverse tuners on all three of those basses I mentioned before: 79, 78, 4001's and 81 4003. They used those for a while during the late 70's early 80's. I like them they are easier to turn. I have a 72 Ric also and they also turn counterclockwise like almost all tuners. They're Grover Slimlines. All the new Rics also turn counter-clockwise as do almost all basses and guitars righty and lefty.
