I mentioned Ric acoustics to my local dealer here on Saturday and he went all strange - like he'd seen a ghost. My guess is he's never seen one or didn't even know they existed!!

David,
The saddle on the Comstock is compensated. The Shiloh is not but I believe they're all compensated now. I think I got one of the earlier Shilohs. There was a review in a British guitar rag back around 2000 that reviewed the acoustics and I think they mentioned that all future Ric acoustics would have compensated saddles.

Neil, I hope to take better shots of both guitars this week and I'll post more close-ups of the 730S.

Cheers,
Bill

Well, if you ever find yourself at the end of the world (on Minnesota's North Shore) you can come and try my Comstock! Image

Melissa, I've spent some good times in the past in a place called "Lutsen", a beautiful resort on the North Shore.

That's Bob D country up there on Hoghway 51...

Lutsen....that's only 20 minutes down the road from my home in Grand Marais! Great skiing there, too, but I haven't been able to afford it in years.... Who's Bob D?

Melissa, that would be Robert Zimmerman..aka Dylan. I think Paul meant Highway 61.

A lot of folks don't relate Dylan to Minnesota, much less Hibbing or Duluth...an easy think to forget.

Yeah, 61...hit the wrong key. Stiff fingers and stiffer brain cells.

You live in beautiful and inspirational country, Melissa!

I know....and I feel thankful and very blessed every time I look out the window and enjoy the view, although sometimes small-town living seems a little confining....

Bill: thanks for the photo of the compensated saddle. It looks as if the compensation is equal for the pairs i.e. the octaves are the same as the regular strings. Maybe this should be the suject for another thread, but I find the whole subject of 12 string intonation to be fascinating. Some folks are quite happy with 6 saddle bridges; others say that only 12 will do; most acoustic players are lucky to have even what yours has, settling for a straight saddle for all 12.

So, how is the intonation on yours?

Melissa: we come up to Lutsen/Grand Marais (depending on where we stay) every fall around Labor Day. It would probably inspire a near-fatal GAS attack, but I'd love to see your Rickenbacker collection.....

Hey, I live on Hoghway 51.

David,
The intonation is fine. The B is a little sharp at the 12th on the uncompensated Shiloh but it's not noticeable when playing. I could have the nut done where I work or I've been thinking of calling Ric to see if I can get a compensated one sent to me. It really hasn't been a problem. The 12 is great.

I've never really had a problem w/the 6 saddle on the electrics either. I have the 12 on one but I wouldn't complain if it were a 6 saddle.

Do you usually have issues w/intonation?
