Wow! Not one Feb birthday, but John Walker gets March going on day 2. Very nice!

And very nice S bass! My Frankenstein bass started life as a JG 4001SLH:

March marks the 34th birthday of my heavily modded '79 4001 JG - the "Harley Bass".

This was my first Rick bass that I purchase for $450 back in 1982 with money I made washing dishes. Still a great player and a got-to in my arsenal.

Then & now(ish)- when I was 16, and again a few years ago. Wearing that chunky coil cable and Nike swoosh like a boss. HA HA!

Is it that time of year to post the same photos of the same two instruments I have that were made in March?

OK, I'm a couple of days late for my February baby, but what the hey, is anyone tired of it yet?

Just a bit over 3 years old (though I'm told it sat around Ben's office for a couple of years before it actually got a serial number)... And, just to be on time, I've got one for March. This one's 4 years old this month...

I was just playing around with the old 8x10 Deardorff (over 70 years old), like 5 minutes ago. Unfortunately I have no film or anywhere to process it anymore, anyway.

Jeffrey - that would be great if there was someone or some company who specialized in converting these old medium and LG format cameras to digital. Take the chassis & lens & whatnot and give them the digital internal works... something like that. I would think that there would be a market for it since a lot of guys love their old gear and would prefer using it over buying something new.

Cjj & Sean - great gear, guys! That AZ double neck is a rarity; and you certainly have a knack for grabbing some of the sweetest grain out there, CJ. That bird's eye is especially awesome.

Well OK then! Just to prove I'm a certified grain and flame freak, here's one I don't even know how to play from 1958. I can't really be sure of the actual manufacturing date since the serial numbers from that period don't really tell you, but the pots date to the 2nd week of 1958, so it was probably made sometime in early '58...

4001S born March 1963.

Thanks Mark! The '77 4001 is true ATG, with a matte finish. The '04 4003 is MBvp with gold guard & TRC, and oven knobs.

The '76 3001 (my first Rick!) did not make it thru the '80's unscathed. Factory JG when I bought it, sanded down to natural in my bandmate's basement (whoops), refin'd in ATG a few years ago. With it's gloss, probably more WAL than ATG.

Yeah, CJ - that lapsteel wood is phenomenal. Unbelievable. Looking at the wood from the top & side angles, it looks like Flame Maple is Quilted Maple seen from the side cut. Interesting.

Scathing aside, Matt - the refin on the 3001 looks great.
