Electronics is my profession. I also am conversant with the (now old) Van Halen idea of running "Brown Sound" by running amps at reduced supply voltage by using a Variac.
Should you use one or need one? Not needed at all.

Andy M - I think the thing you were looking at and thinking was a Variac is just a mains extension.
Had to look up what a Variac is, as I've never heard of them in the UK. :)

The extension reel is vaguely similar to this one:

But, if that extension cord is long enough (say, several miles in length) it could, inadvertently, act like a variac, of sorts! :mrgreen:

Well, to be fair, there's two kits up there. .... just like Peart.... Though Fred's kit does take up a bit of real estate. It sounds great.
