Ted/Jeff (from earlier in the thread) obviously big Gedddy fans and I am right with you there. I think if I was asked the question "Who is your favourite bass player?" and I had to answer immediately, I think I would stutter Ge...Ent...Geddy. Yes I think Geddy would just scrape it. Now here is an idea that some people could see as controversial. When Entwistle died The Who announced they would continue with the tour with Pino Paladino on bass. Now he is great, but in my opinion not suitable for The Who. I have had the pleasure of seeing The Who 4 times over the last 25 years and the last time was in 04 at The Isle of Wight. Paladino was good but very understated and not in the slightest flash. Thats where the problem is in my opinion. He obviously doesnt want to emulate or try and outdo the great man so he plays very conservatively. The Whos performance misses that outrageous distorted treble sounding lead bass. I dont think anyone should try and copy JE but I think the songs need a bit more than what PP is doing for them. Now here is my thought. Geddy Lee for The Who as his sideline band. Its simple, how often do The Who tour ? How often do Rush tour ? Geddy is a huge Who fan, and I am sure that it could be scheduled. I am led to believe Geddy used to play a fair bit of Who material in his youth. Imagine it, Geddy on stage flashing it up a bit with his spin on JE bass lines instead of Paladino. It would work !It would be an easy night for him, backing vocals only, no keys, no footpadals......a walk in the park ! I believe Geddy could have added a spark to the performance that is not there since JE died. There arent too many guys out there that could get anywhere near what JE played as he was so fast...Geddy could ! I would be interested in hearing some thoughts on this.

John Wetton or Billy Sheenan could also fill in ... but it would be more fun to see Geddy rocking with the Who ...

Yes Geddy couldn't rock if he was playing a boulder, he's a great technician, but that's it. Entwistle rocked from the tip of his toes. He improvised all the time, everytime they played their songs were different. Rush plays everything note for note, that is not rock, that is a loud orchestra.

I think Geddy is more interesting to listen to than Entwistle ... and I like Entwistle a lot ... the truth is could what's left of the Who keep up with Geddy? On Rush's newest CD they do a good cover of Seeker ... The Who was less disciplined than Rush ... the Who jammed more ... The Who never did anything like YYZ ... Geddy would have to get an explorer bass ... Or Geddy and Pete could both play Rics ... now that would be a site ...

Geddy is indeed a Who fan. I agree, his style is quite different from JE's but I have heard old recordings of Rush doing Who covers from the early 70's. I think he could do it.

I agree with Jeff though that Rush is much more disciplined than the Who so how about Flea as the JE replacement? The guy is a high energy groove machine but can be mellow when the song requires. He is not afraid to use a variety of tones. He has a tremendous melodic and harmonic sense (he spent his early years playing be bop). The most important thing is that he can play the living hell out of a bass.

I think Geddy would kick a** in The Who. He can do the busy lines of JE. I'm not that big of a Who fan but I love Rush. I saw them do The Seeker live and it was awesome. I think Ged's busy line in the big money is proof enough. he can sing and play that so he could do the job. And yeah it would be a walk in the park. No keys, no pedals, and no fake backup singers, Just him playing and doing REAL backup would be perfect.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Geddy could do the job with The Who. The thing with Rush is, it HAS to be disciplined, its the type of band it is ! Geddy has so much on in that band he has to play text book style. I wouldnt have thought that there was a lot of room for improvisation. But as I said earlier, in The Who he would have breathing space being the bass player only. Obviously this is all hyperthetical, but what a sight it would be. Ted, I love Flea ! he is exciting and an extremely capable player, but do you think he could get his hands around some of the lines. He is a funk player as much as a rock player and the slapping etc is a big part of his style. He isnt particularly known for his speed of hand.....unlike JE and Geddy ! it would be interesting though I must say to see him up there with Townshend and Daltry!
