and who should we thank for the "Day Tripper" riff? John Lennon? Paul McCartney? George Harrison? George Martin?

Sorry...of course that's the guy, my fumbly two-fingered typing to the contrary...

Surprising the Forum spell-checker missed that one...(unless the Forum spell-checker is actually you, JJ)...

I believe, bass-wise, "Lovely Rita" is one of the tougher tunes, if only because Paul doesn't seem to play the same thing twice throughout the tune. Lots of pedal-point motion in the bass.

And apologies if this has been brought up, but I believe the classical guitar part on "Bungalow Bill" is actually a demo loop on the Mellotron.

Andrew: Never heard that the 'Bungalow Bill' intro was a Mellotron. I always thought is was Ringo (the best guitarist in the group). That's very interesting. Well, at least I know for sure it was Ringo playing the lead bits on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'...

The 'Bungalo Bill' intro is indeed a mellotron sample. I have a King Crimson collectors club release...or it might even be the official "Epitaph" box set...anyway, it's a live recording from 1969. In the midst of a typical doom and destruction King Crimson composition, the Bungalo Bill intro comes bouncing through.

Kinda like the beach ball bouncing though the set of "The Prisoner"...

I am convinced the "day tripper" riff came about when one of them tried playing "oh, pretty woman" and messed it up!

John, it's a hoot and a challenge to sing "Pretty Woman" to the "Day Tripper" riff, and really corn-fuses an audience. They register disbelief (those who aren't already wearing their "beer-muffs") and then get up to leave.

On second thought...

At the time it came out, I recall some country western folks saying the Daytripper riff was lifted from a country song.

I read somewhere Lennon got the riff from Bobby Parkers, Watch Your Step, but I don't hear it. I tend to believe it was just a re-configuration of 'Pretty Woman', like John said in his post.
