What was the BIN?

OK looking back I see the BIN was in the $7K range… So this makes absolutely no sense to me. Why would you not hit the BIN if you’re willing to bid to that level anyway? You know it's going to bid over that BIN! This guy is going to make an additional $1K+ than he was willing to make.

Marc – you’re absolutely right about no duty - that was something I was aware of and I would have avoided shipping – this guy was willing to drop it off at a friend of mine’s home.

Actually if he imported this bass into the EU, paid duty and then exports the bass back to the US he could get back what he paid in duty on top of the margin he’s making…

Oh well…

Andy, to my recollection this is the first time an LK auction has been seen through. There really was no way to determine the price a collector would pay from an unknown source for a piece like this. We also don't know if the high bidder at the end will be for real.

I can understand Brian's reluctance but, I would have hit it at that level. But, then I wouldn't be talking about the pending arrival of a 4005.

I believe MrEd has been selling them at $7.5K a pop ...
I'm not faulting Brian - I just think we need to really think about the environment before acting. Brian himself has said he has received an offer of 8K for his.

I personally think that with patients, you could get 12K for one of these and that’s what make me consider going for this – but with two major property purchases in the last month my bank account tells me different…

I only ever bought two things from out of the country before.....both were US items and I was charged duties for both. I don't know what the specific rules are but I do know that I was charged before I was allowed to pick up at my local UPS hub. Maybe the charges were incorrect but that was my past experience.

I know what I was offered for mine but aside from Ed Roman's had never seen any actually sell for that much. I was hoping to get it for closer to $7K total.....the BIN would have put it at around $8K with shipping. I figured since none have sold that people may not be willing to go this high.....I was wrong. If I didn't have one I would have hit the BIN just to make sure I got it. Now that I know what others are actually willing to spend I'll make some different decisions next time.

I will have a second one.....just not sure when though. Maybe the price from this auction will draw out a few that were bought as "investments"

I'm going to call my wife's uncle who was a customs agent for many years and try to get some clarity on this. Doesn't seem right that you'd have to pay duty on a US produced item.
