McCartney new song on advert...WHO CARES?
Let me clarify myself ('atta boy, Luther). This is always difficult since there is no real 'one-on-one' communication on threads/posts or the like.
McCartney, as you alluded Paul, was the 'cute' Beatle, and he has aged. However, he still writes songs as if he were the reigning 'cute' Beatle he once was.
As far as 'Eleanor Rigby'is concerned, it is far better lyrically than such masterpieces as, "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Uncle Albert", to name only two.

Jerry, I'd say "Watch that BALD stuff" but everybody including me thinks I look better BALD, so thank you veddy much!
Stan: I always saw "64" as tongue in cheek. "Uncle Albert" makes me tune out anyway possible, as quickly as possible.
Dave, you need glasses. He looks like a cadaver. Nothing personal, you unnerstand, Dave...
RS is only expressing an opinion, like we common people are also allowed to do in a musical democracy. As I recall, they liked "Temporary Secretary" too.
Execrable.

The bald comment was a reaction to the comment about how un-well he's aged. No offence to the folicularly challenged of the world (myself included).
At one point I used to get mad at him and say c'mon Paul, lift that face! You owe it to your fans to stay young, you, the symbol of our youth. Now I say bravo for not going "Hollywood" and doing it.
This thread got a bit extreme IMO, downright mean spirited, something I don't expect on the Rick forum. Well, I didn't, but it is becoming more and more common here. Dude pit stuff. Bigger words than dudepit, but still mean sprited.
The consensus seems to be he aint half the man he used to be. Opinions are fine. He has written better songs than just about everyone else in the world. "64" when he was 16 years old I believe. So the stuff he writes now isn't up to Beatle-Paul's fan's standards. Fine. Let's everyone try to write something up to par with his current work. He still hasn't written anything as bad as "Oh Yoko". But then Lennon's a god for dying young.
If each one of us were performing up to genius standards in our 20's, then in our '60's still performing, but not as well, would we feel it fair to be ridiculed right down to our looks for that?
Crimeny, he gets this **** worldwide seemingly all the time.
Sorry for spurting. I think I'll stay on the upper portion of the forum and just talk about guitars.

I tend to agree with Mr. Juden on this topic. You will find no bigger Beatle-fan than me, and Paul certainly doesn't need me -- or really any of us -- to defend him.
Sir Paul DOES seem to have taken more than his share of criticism on the topic of artistic integrity and his talents NOW as opposed to THEN. But I suppose in days of old there was some old Guttenburg-press forum with someone opining, "Have you heard Beethoven's Ninth? Yuck. Man, that dude sure lost it after the 5th...."
I tend to feel that the whole "genius" thing was a part of the John-and-Paul yin-&-yang. Each had their strengths, one pulling the other back from whichever brink he was teetering upon -- pure shmaltz or world-shattering anarchy. As they started to fragment and go their different ways, their music did too. As big a fan of theirs as I was in the 60s, I only picked up a handful of their individual albums in the 70s. And then, there were only a few songs that I really enjoyed. To me, their individual albums struck me like The White Album -- you could have taken all the really good stuff from their 70s albums (and I include Ringo and George too) and made one really good Beatle album.
The comment about "Lennon's a god for dying young" hit me in the gut. It would be interesting to speculate what would've happened if Lennon was still alive -- or even if the situation were reversed. Would we be ripping Lennon's sell-out of "I'm Only Sleeping" to sell Sominex and sanctifying Paul with an indulgence worthy of "If JFK had only NOT gone to Dallas..."? At the very least, we'd be here discussing the latest mods on Lennon's 325 and saying, "And for God's sake, what does he SEE in that woman?"
But it is what it is. Paul's here...George and John are not. Paul's got the higher profile, so he's the easiest target. Is his music more lightweight than, say, U2? Maybe...but I really doubt he sits down at a piano and says to himself, "OK, let's write a right nice piece of poof to sell to the kiddies and the biddies."
Or maybe he does. Who knows.
But I know I still get goosebumps when he does "Hey Jude". And I get misty-eyed when I hear "The Long and Winding Road" playing behind kids talking about wanting to be in a safe car in those GM OnStar commercials. And the new Fidelity ad, "This Is Paul"? Not bad. It's not going to make me do business with them any more than I would've anyway, but it beats that current commercial with the Stones (still a "legitimate" rock & roll entity, of course), shilling whatever they're shilling (I don't even remember the product now -- Polident, maybe?).
My .02. Maybe we agree to disagree on the issue and put this on the shelf along with politics and religion.

I tend to agree with both Jerrys. It seems that the Beatles greatness was generated from all the elements each individual brought to the group. Obviously John & Paul were the main focal points, especially in the early years. Their combined talents were unmatched then as well as today. But as other have stated neither John nor Paul were/are quite as strong on their own. With that being said, they were/are still better than the majority of their rivals then & now.
As time has passed, the loss of John & George has some what forced Macca into a position of carrying the so called "Beatle torch". I'm not trying to slag off on Ringo by any means, he just does not have the same musical credentials that Paul, John and George gained. To me it seems that every one is always expecting the next truly great/amazing (Beatlesque) tune from Macca. He has always been in a no win situation because of his tremendous success with the Beatles. I don't think He will ever be able to duplicate that same critically acclaimed success because of many reasons, some of which might include the many changes all of us go through as we grow older, have kids, become responsible parents and develop other interests. However, in my mind the greatest reason is because he needed John as his sounding board and vice versa. Their collaborations brought out the best in each other and gave us all some wonderful music that will live forever.
I'm still a fan and always will be. However, I realise that none of the Beatles created as many solo hits as they did as a group. Paul is not the only one that has turned out some questionable stuff. It just seems he gets blasted for his efforts more than the others. As far as how well he has aged or what he looks like, isn't that a mute point? That really has nothing to do with his music. Hell he's 63 years old, is he suppose to look like he's 25 forever? Come on folks, I'm in my mid 40's and hope to goodness I'll hold up as well as Macca has. He's still doing pretty darn well as far as I'm concerned. Let's not always set the bar higher for Paul because of his past. Sure we expect great things from him and may sometimes be disappointed, but lets also be thankful for his great contributions to our musical heritage over the past 40 years. When you actually look at all the music he has created (with Beatles & post Beatles) it's truly amazing. Quite a talent, he's alright by me!

It is what it is!
I sell real estate, when I first got in the biz a very successful agent took me under his wing and said ,you'll need to thicken your skin, because when you become successful a few of those that are not or have not achieved the same degree of success for whatever reason, will back bite, murmur and dispute and just plain ***** to anyone who'll listen about your success and gloat gleefully at any failure you encounter. He was right. What the hell is it about the human mind that looks at those that have achieved thru hard *** work and paying their dues that they feel compelled to tear you down. When you're in the spot light of whichever arena in life you choose to compete in ,you're fair game when you are successful. How do I handle it ? I smile because I'm the one going to the bank to make a deposit

THEN vs NOW...I always thought he was long on ham and short on rye, with a big order of schmaltz on the side.
But maybe that's just sour pickles...

Thanks, Stan and Paul, for expressing views outside the same old capitalist apologies for the apalling behavior of the rich and powerful. And for you guys who think the acquisition of money makes everything okay, and that anyone who disagrees with that premise is merely envious of the upper class and pining to live among them, I can only tell you in the strongest possible terms that you're wrong.
I'll slam 'Macca' for the same reasons I'd slam the Beverly Hills' set...if you don't feel the impending cultural doom in the air and the fact that '**** is King' and has been for decades, then we simply disagree...and you must feel pretty good about the way things are going...keep smiling all the way to the bank, brothers.
The 'dudepit' with 'bigger words', huh? Oooh, what a 'singe'...We could always start using smaller words, if that would be a help with communicating...dude...

Me no angry at you, friend...but it hard for me to lighten up...In-dus-tri-al world make me cra-zy some-times...
When threads are about how cool Ricks are, or Forum members announcing gigs or get-togethers, or any of a number of more pleasant topics, I'm as cordial and friendly as the next guy...maybe even a little more...but this thread, like some others, was more serious in tone from the outset, having been begun for the purposes of discussing the rightness or wrongness of selling out. Maybe in the future I should rely on someone's ability to post "I know just what that freak out in Denver would say about this" and I'll stay out of it...
J*sus, JJ...my pickles are sour, too...must be something in the water...
Please, brothers and sisters, by all means have a nice day...just stop acting like you 'deserve' one...

It really ticks me off that some think that people with money are the blame for societies problems.
Maybe Paul is just cruising. What does he have to prove. I said on another thread that I don't expect Abbey Road from him again, and thats ok. I don't expect Good Vibrations froom Brian Wilson either, but I still enjoy his stuff. I think that for me, I can tolerate Paul's stuff because he did give us Abbey Road. I guess I give him the benefit of the doubt and love most of his stuff because who he is and what his music and bass playing has meant to me.
BTW Dane... you don't sound cordial or friendly and I'm quie certain I deserve a nice day. I just paid off a second mortgage for a local orphanange. Good thing I had money to do that.
Sorry to sound pissy...perhaps I should stay out of your water.
