Personally, while I think there are exceptional basses, I would not pay more that $2500 or so for one.

Just because of my wants and needs- a C64 would suit me better, but if money was no object- I might consider like $3500.

For 8-9 grand (or so) I could get me dream bass- an ALembic Exploiter Entwistle tribute (or something close to it)-

Here's a question that's been rolling around in my mind: does anyone know how many of these things are circulating at this particular point in time?

I've heard references to the edition number made by folks. I'm just curious as to how many more are coming out before the edition is complete.

Congrats on the LK Steve! Very nice, enjoy it.

The total number being produced is 60 units. I'm not at the office but I believe I heard last week that there was less than 10 left to deliver.

The edition was originally limited to 50 units but we increased it to 60 in order to accomodate the orders for those who were displaced by "that Kansas music store", which was supposed to tell all customers to contact customer service so we could arrange their orders elsewhere.

There was no other order (or dealer!) cancellation in the process.

Mr. Hall, for the record, I fault no one but myself, for not being more diligent.

I like Alembics also Dave. I had a 5-Mark King Signature back in the early '90's. I really liked the set up and tone, but man was that sucker heavy.

That's fine and certainly the right thing to do if the Alembic is your dream bass but while a 4004LK that costs $7-8K will retain it's value (or possibly increase) the Alembic's resale will likely be about 25-50% of it's new price. That's a hard pill to swallow even if you plan on never selling it. I love Alembics.....they play great, the tone is wonderful and the attention to detail is exceptional but the new price vs. resale has been a deal breaker for me.

Even though I have loved about every Alembic that I have played I have yet to justify the cost for even a reasonably priced used example.....I always end up with another Ric.

Yes, and not to mention that gizmo attachment thing that you have to contend with on Alembic's.

So what actually was the original order price? I know that it bears no relation to what they're going for now, I'm just curious.
I never had much interest in the LK originally, but the close up shots are fantastic. Beautiful work.

slightly off topic, but in reaction to Brian's post, I've got an Alembic (a Spoiler/Exploiter in fact), and I much prefer passive Rickenbacker pickups, even the weak '70s 4001 pickups, to the actives in the Alembic. Of course, it is Spoiler electronics and not the top of the line Alembic electronics (whatever those are called!), but still I prefer a Ric to an Alembic...

The street price for a Lemmy was around $1900.
I thought I'd post some more close ups of the carving on my 4004LK. I'm still wondering how the carving ended up different than the pattern John Hall has said was used to rough in the design before the carver got to it. It would be interested to hear how this happened.

I absolutely *love* Explorer-shaped basses. Actually, I love Explorer-shaped anything.

What I would want is one of those Alembic Exploiters, but with passive pickups, no active electronics, and that doesn't cost $8000. Oh, and it can't weigh more than 10 lbs. But still, Harry, that's a gorgeous bass.
