Andy - like you, I went with a US Lakland 5 string. Lightweight with a beautiful neck - it plays like a dream. Brian - I would certainly recommend a Lakland if you're looking for a non-RIC 5 string.

Laklands and Rickenbackers are my favourite basses, and as much as I love the Lakland 5'er, I will definitely order a 4004cii/5 when they're back in production.

I've asked Peter to edit my profile and update my email addy. It's [email protected]

And everyone, again I'm sorry for having derailed this thread into a pissing contest, but I am upset with Rickenbacker over this mess. They did wrong and it should be noted. I ordered a bass and waited for two years and then the order was cancelled, so I hope you understand my gripe. I won't order another even if they do fix it. But I'm through making an issue of it here, and won't continue complaining on this forum.

Wasn't Mr. Ed really a zebra?

Anyway, when I need a 5 string, I pull out my Reverend. The neck feels a lot like the 4004cii5 and will hold me over just fine. Of course the day RIC reintroduces the model, I'll be laying down some $ on one.

Cool colour Erik! Is that sea foam green? Reverend also had a finish that looked a bit like a liteshow (without the lights of course).

I went the SUPER cheap route to hold me over. Ibanez SG DX305, and a Fender MB105. They did the job, and were really cheap. 305 was 165 off ebay, and the fender was 175 NEW lol. Still have them as backups. Never play em anymore though.

This would be my choice for a non-Ric 5 string.......

.......a Modulus Quantum 5 for about $1500 used.....

Ok, I guess I'll stick my nose in here.

If your a serious player, and have a preference for a 5 string, RIC is not the way to go right now.

Seems pretty obvious to me.

I dunno.

I do have sympathy for the people that had orders in, and then suddenly got cancelled. Thats not right.

No, it sure wasn't. My Zon V is probably better than the 4004cii5 would have been anyway.

I am a serious 5 string player so I have seven five string Rics ... all of them modified ...

and most of my other basses are 4-2-5 fender designs ... I just don't like the active modern basses ...

but young 5 string players won't get to experience Rickenbacker ... they will have to settle for the souless active no personality import basses ... bummer ...
