Who plays bass for Dave Matthews? I have heard some awfully tasty bass grooves in his music.

That would be Stefan Lessard.

What about Colin Moulding - XTC. Fantastic bass playing. I wish I was as good!

At risk of being blackballed, I've noticed no-one ever seems to mention players such as Steve Harris, Billy Sheehan, or Cliff Burton. Along with Geddy and the other giants these guys have been a big influence, IMHO. I recently learned of a rick player from the early 90's named Adrian Davison, who I find to be very innovative, solo bas style. His style unfortunately never really caught on unless you consider Billy Sheehan. Oh, and lets not forget Derrick Smalls..

I wouldn't say Steve Harris, Billy Sheehan, or Cliff Burton are underrated. They get all the kudos they deserve.

Billy Sheehan is a great session player as well as a great soloist. On the Crossroads guitar festival DVD, he can be seen playing with Steve Vai's band. There's a sequence during the song they do where Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, and two other guitar players in his band are all standing side by side fretting their own instruments whilst plucking the strings of the instrument next to them. That bit was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Billy also does a great solo on top of that.

Cliff Burton is hardly underrated. Amazing bassist . . . the only people who ignore him and his immense influence are denying reality . . .
Stefan Lessard is a great bassist, but he gets so undermixed, it's not even funny. They really hand the mix over to Dave Matthew's horrendous voice, and manage to ignore the two most talented members of the band: Stefan and drummer Carter Beauford.
