Here's a shot of Paul and his 61 HOFNER. I don't think I've seen a photo of it after 1968.

I'm not quite sure about that Hofner shot. It appears that it has three pickups, and I think it is the 62 model with some sort of applique as the middle pickup. Any better (bigger) shots?

Thanks John. That is a better shot. I just got excited about seeing it after the Revolution video.

Funny thing about that pic, which has been suitably discussed over at Beatgearcavern, is the 2 different pickups, neck being chrome and middle being gold of all things, and the foam stuck under the strings at the bridge. Seems #1 vanished at Twickenham in Jan. of '69.

I don't know if this helps on the pick-up colors, but, my first bass was a late 60's Hofner that was in pretty bad condition. The pick-up covers were very tarnished, and after a good polishing (removed all the plating) they looked gold. Must have been made of brass?

I agree with you, Kevin.
This is my 1961 500/1's pickup. The plate is getting thinner and looks little gold with light.

That picture has to be pretty close to one of the last times Paul ever saw it. Where the heck is that bass?

That's a great theory! I hadn't thought of heavy wear as the reason. Lord knows there's a million hours on that bass. Wouldn't it be amazing if it ever shows up again?

Given that the boys were rather careless with their equipment -- putting basses on the floor for example -- I have no doubt that the Hofner just walked out of the studio one night. If they were in the studio daily, they probably didn't even bother to put guitars back in the cases. It's probably sitting in a janitor's rec room in Soho.

They would put their guitars 9and Ringo his drums) in the closets at Abbey Road. Anyone who got in to the studio could have access.

I'm positive that the bass walked away from Twickenham.
I don't have the book in front of me, but in Beatle Gear their is a picture of a group (The Aerovons?) Posing with the Beatles gear at Abbey Road.
Great pictures Jerry!
