wow-nice 2 year 3 week jump there! ok since i missed out on the original thread,i'll jump in with the fab4's "i'm only sleeping",simple,but memorable bass on that one. "all right now" by free,surely one of the best featured bass in a song ever,with presumably flatwounds...and i can't think of anything more recent,altho i suspect that the bassist in coldplay MAY be using flats,listen to "clocks".....

I just put on Sloop John B and listened to it twice...the tone is memorable and signature.

I won't venture a guess on how it was done, but I do agree with Biscuti that it sounds multi-tracked. Too much click for any Fender I've heard, and lots of sub-octave stuff going on that you can't even hear clearly on most "stereos" of the era (March '66 if memory serves me--I do remember the first time I ever heard it, on my Emerson tube portable radio, on the California Ave. bus in Chicago, right near the corner of California and Chicago avenues...I digress seemingly, except to say that that radio's 4" speaker, which was twice the size of a transistor portable's, got much of the upper bass harmonics and of course the contrapuntal click).

Those sub-octave harmonics can be electronically generated nowadays (and usually sound awful to my own ears!) but then, I'm thinking either huge speaker (B-18N?) or standup, close-miked. What the heck kind of mike would they have used in '66 for that kind of fidelity without distortion on those super-long wave forms?

Thanx Phillip for this megabump. Now I've got a change to mention Serge GainsBourg - Bonny and Clyde as favorite flatwound bassriff. I'm still not certain if it is a Rick though. I've seen various sources mention various basses as to what bass is used.

Almost anything Dee Murray or Pete Cetera, and I don't care if it is consistanly flat wound tone.

Without being specific, all Jamerson stuff is flatwound and undeniable.

Bass Player had the transcription to Bennie and the Jets a while back and said to listen to his other great lines. They listed all the radio play stuff and didn't mention Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Harmony, Amoreena, or any other of his great album track lines. I was a bit upset at BP for seemingly glossing over his work.

Cetera? He's my newest bass playing hero. I can't stand the "new" Chicago stuff (does 20 years count as new?), but some of my favorite basslines are Introduction, Questions 67&68, Lowdown, Dialogue 1, In the Country... Great tone all around.

Maybe I'm crazy on this one, getting back to flatwound Ricks, given another thread I think is from the Beatles forum, but I love the bassline to Only a Northern Song. It's becoming one of my favorite Beatle lines.

Wow ! I actually started this thread when I was registered as "zoomduck" . David Hood for sure . Jamerson always and Macca on a Hofner or Rickenbacker forever . Now I have LaBella flats on my Pedulla Thundrebolt and rounds on the 4004Cii 4-2-5 . Mmmmmmm.......flatwounds!

No way thats GH on bass on Taxman. The guitar solo, played by Paul, was recorded as an overdub. That bass line is McCartney on his Rick all the way.

As for JPJ and roundwounds, I read an interview w/ him from the mid 70's where he said he used flats on his Jazz, rounds on his P Bass and rounds on his Alembic. I know in recent interviews he said he used rounds on his jazz, but I think his memory might be shot, lol.
