Jerry played it, though not really long enough to form an opinion on much; it wasn't even plugged into and amp...Scratch-X and Zymol will eliminate the halos. I watched this one come together at the factory. The lady who does the harnesses is amazing...we pulled the guards and TRC from the stockroom and five minutes later, the lower guard was wired and ready to go into the cavity.
Thanks to Ben, Eric (for paint), Fred (who set it up and test-played it), Peter (who did the final detailing) and everyone else at RIC. Amazing job!
JB, thanks for the tip...my guitars are rotated through the stand and played frequently. Five months and no discoloration yet. Small poly bags over the surfaces, I guess, will be the next task...

Surgical tubing stretched over the contact surfaces solves the problem. That's how we fixed ours. I got the tubing at a medical supply shop. The non-colored all rubber stuff.
Thanks to JH for one of the best tips yet.

Never, ever drool on your surf shirt. It wrecks the solo.

Good stand. Looks like it'll hold my acoustics as well...I'll have to git me one.

I have only had it for a few months but I get the impression that the Quiklok people thought this one through pretty well. Paul would certainly better know if any of the materials would be reactive to common guitar finishes. I am guessing there are no issues. Mr. X has had one for about a year with no adverse affect. His guitars spend little time in their cases.
The Rockstand has rectangular tubes covered with cheap foam which, in addition to discoloration, can leave dents in the edge of the guitar if left to sit for a while.

Dents? Oh, horsepoopy.
Jeez, I really never thought I'd be defending Rockstand...guys, it was an impulse purchase and meant to allow me to gain some space and still have some of my guitars at hand for those frequent but brief evening sessions. My cottage is such that I either must hang or stand my guitars or store them in a less-than accessible place in their cases.
OK, I am looking at the Quiklok stand above and see a lot of similarities in its construction to the Rockstand. Biggest difference is in the neck and lower body brackets...both look hard-edged, but I imagine are molded from a softer plastic or covered with something that cushions the finish? My first impression was that those bottom brackets look a bit Star-Warsy, but I'll admit that I like the acoustic storage possibilities. If those bottom brackets are hard-surfaced, though, I'll pass.
RE: the Rockstand...cheap foam? Nope. It's decent quality EPDM (I believe...) closed-cell foam. I don't know where you got the "dents in your guitar" information, Ted, but there is NO WAY that this stand would dent my guitars--the padding is simply too thick. The guitars DO dent the foam where they contact it.
Last evening, I went home with this thread on my mind and removed every guitar from the Rockstand. I inspected each very closely for any sign of dulling or discoloration from resting on the foam. ZIP (so far). The idea that this would dent my guitars is laughable.
Lastly, I see no structural advantage to using round cross-section tubing over rectangular in constructing such a device...I have not seen the Quiklok up close and personal, but the rectangular tubing used for the base returns looks identical to the Rockstand's in size. Round vs. rectangular is a pointless discussion.

The molded parts of the Quiklok are soft plastic.
The foam on my Rockstands would flatten out and offer nearly no protection from the squared off corners of the tubing. I covered mine with foam pipe insulation after I noticed that my Lakland had a set of shallow dents that matched up nicely with the Rockstand frame. Afterwards I noticed similar marks on one of my 4001s. A friend had nearly the same experience with an Alembic and a Rick. Perhaps your foam is different but it did indeed happen here.

I'll betcha they changed the foam. But another year of use should clear up that question and the horsepoopy, too. Right now, the foam is solid and cushiony. I wonder if the higher ozone level in Chicago has anything to do with it???
