Sam Adams makes a lot of good ones, including Black Lager and Summer Ale. Can't beat a good O-fest beer, my favorite being Hacker Pschorr. Don't know if it's available everywhere, but Yuengling Lager is a great every day beer. I like their Porter, too.
To keep this on thread, I guess drinking a Spaten or Paulaner brau while playing might make the Chinese Hofner seem a little more...German.

I second that Jim on the Yuengling lager.
The porter is good too, and so is the Black and Tan, and oh yes I can't forget Chesterfield Ale.

My wife bought me a case of SA Winter Classics yesterday. Interesting thread, I have a Rogue, but nothing to compare it with, this is the first bass I've owned or played

I think maybe its time to hunt to a Contemporary and hollow out that slab with a dremel tool.

I contacted Music Ground in the UK about the Contemporary, and the bass is $856, plus $190 shipping to US.
Grand total $1046.
For a few hundred more you could get a used Hofner.

I love the entire Sam Adams line. Although I'll admit I drink mostly water now. For a few hundred more you may be able to get a new Hofner too Bob.

Dan, check this out. Gary at North Coast Music just bought the entire first US allocation of Contemporary basses. $868 includes the hardshell case, and $30 for shipping. The Hofner strap fits too. Now where talking a great looking Hofner with the German pups.

Brian, I did buy a German Hofner. I got a pretty good BIN on a 2005 Club last Friday.

I'll probably get a CT bass soon. I suspect it will be better than the '79 model I used to own. That bass played great, and was built great. The weak link was those lousy bar magnet pick-ups. They were the pits, At least the ones in my bass were. The staple vintage pick-ups, if they work like Paul's, should sound fine. I'm hoping it will work nicely along side my Rickenbackers.

Has anyone actually played the Icon Series yet? I know a number of folks have one on order.


What is the feedback on the sound and playability???? Does it look good?

I got one of the first ones from North Coast. It is a step above the Epiphone viola, two steps and more above the Rogue types, but behind a good 60's Hofner wanna be. I have owned over 15 fake Hofners and the best one's, the one's I've kept are the 60's fake ones, Like Black Jack and no names. The ICON, however is a superb option for it's big brother. Putting Pyramids on it are absolute essential. It is a great alternative, but the V62 and V63 sound more authentic. Trust me.

I got an Icon. See Ed's comment above. Basically if you want an inexpensive "Hofner" - here it is. I haven't heard the CT bass yet. I owned several Hofners, I never hung on to them because I couldn't see dropping $1600+ for one of them.

Bob that Contemporary looks awful good. Man this is getting really hard. I wonder how a side drill mounted router would do on that consarned wood block LOL..
