Fender Tube Reverb Unit Versus Digital Options

While I continue to have this discussion about the tank placement with myself, I have discovered that the tank will not fit horizontally as the tubes get in the way. Hence the vertical placement.

Hi all, I love spring reverb, and do not like digital reverb at all for guitar amps. I like the Fender reverb. It can go from very subtle at around 2 to really swampy/surfy up at 4-6. I've been using a blonde/brown `63 Fender Reverb tank RI bone stock for over ten years with my fawn AC30, then bought a CC2X as a back up. The CC2x reverb is a bit tricky to get a sound like my Fender reverb. That being said, I love the way the one control Blackface reverb sounds on my Twin and Super Reverb RI amps. It's also simple to use: one control vs. 3 on the Fender reverb tank unit or the CC2x unit, which has two knobs AND a hi/low drive switch.
Last year, after getting tired of lugging around my reverb unit, along with my pedal board, I bought a Van Amps "Sole Mate" reverb unit, which has that Fender sound. IT does not do as much as the separate reverb tank does, but I've a-B'd it with a RI reverb unit and an original, and it's capable of pumping out much more reverb than I ever need, and works quite nicely for the swampiest of surf tones. It is a solid state unit, but it is a spring reverb. Be3st of all, its dimensions are 10wx6xdx2h, so it fits tidily into my pedal board! Here's the link:

Peter, what does the mod you mentioned in the following quote do?
"I am using this reverb unit with my Vox AC30 Reissue with Celestion Blues. After my modifications to the "Normal" channel (500pf) of the AC 30 I am using it almost exclusively. The old muddy tone of the standard wiring heard on the normal channel is history after the cap mod.
There is no harshness of tone after the retube and I will need some convincing to put in the 390 mfd capacitor at this point. Besides, the tone pot on the unit handles this aspect already, it would seem. If you have done the cap mod, I would be interested in your opinion. "
Also, George, where is Charlie located? I would consider doing this mod. I've heard about the 6k6 tube. I have a blonde/brown Fender Reverb RI:
Long story re: my RI reverb unit Peter.. sounded decent out of the box ..first I retubed and did the cap mod..sounded better,,started to run into some problems with some cold solder connections and sent the unit to Charlie Kittelson..he fixed and did some tweeking including installing a set of hexfreds.(fast recovery diodes)..sounded real good..later ran into a the same problem so took to my current tech and he reversed a couple of the previous mods and has worked great ever sense. My original '65 unit has an overall smoother more musical tone but the reissue after the mods has more gain which is good for me. Glad ya like yours!"
