I keep my Heinlein well-hidden. Love his fiction, but his views are too, er, atavistic for my taste. Try finding and reading "And He Built a Crooked House"...written in '46. Will mess with your mind a bit.

Tony, I do like the two you just posted, bottom one especially. Wouldn't buy them, but they are fine to look at. But the one on top does have the proportions of an old crapper seat.

That Spider thing is just an Explorer/Dean pastiche, I think. And I fail to see the added value in a white spiderweb appliqué. Might as well be a pink teddy bear.

I usually keep my Heinlein in a box, together will all the toys that he always said were safer.....

Someday I simply must rout the edges and add CB to that toy box, double-bound of course

THANK YOU, the bottom one is or WAS mine. Walnut again. I LOVE WALNUT! That bass had a fantastic sound, balanced well and only cost $1300.00, USED of course. The ONLY problem was the NECK was made for KING KONG. NINE PIECES OF MAPLE made up that monster. The width at the 12th fret was 3 1/2"! I could land 747's on that baby!

I like the more traditional models myself, but part of the ALEMBIC deal is they will make ANYTHING you want, so long as you have the cash that is!

My problem is that I love the exotic woods, and the QUIET electronics of an Alembic, but I love the feel, balance, weight and sound of a RIC. For some reason, when I'm playing my RIC's, I almost never have to look where my hand is on the neck. My fingers just know where to go. I've played a lot of basses, and that ONLY happens on a RIC. I don't have to THINK when I'm playing one, where as, on my Alembics, I do.

Was the OX's bass the one with the actual note letters for fret markers or was that one of Greg Lake's Alembics?

The spiderweb is a hand made sterling silver inlay.

The OX had the note letters on his bass, Greg Lake owned an 8 string SCORPION bass which is said to have been purchased by the OX years after Greg Lake stopped using it due to neck issues.

I love Alembics.

In the right hands they really impress. There is no greater bang for your buck. You can buy a good used one for less than four figures!

I do agree with Paul, some designs are way OTT and the fancy inlays are not always in the best taste, but a vintage quilted Series 1 is truly a magnificent bass.
